BGA 1440 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
BGA 1440 is Intel ball grid array package for performance mobile processors of the Coffee Lake-H and Comet Lake-H families. The package carries 1,440 contacts in a 42 × 28 mm footprint and solders directly to the laptop mainboard. Intel lists the package as FCBGA1440 in its specification pages, with a 100 C junction limit across the family.

Overview
The package arrived with Coffee Lake-H in April 2018 for 45 W gaming and mobile workstation laptops, then carried Comet Lake-H in April 2020 with higher clocks and DDR4-2933. Core counts span 4 cores on the Core i5 parts to 8 cores on the Core i7 and Core i9 parts of 2020. Every SKU pairs its cores with Intel UHD Graphics for display output, so laptops can run without a discrete GPU for office work.
Memory stays DDR4 across both generations, with two channels and up to 128 GB on Comet Lake-H boards. PCIe runs at version 3.0 with up to 16 lanes from the CPU for graphics and fast storage. Boards add more lanes through the mobile chipset for extra slots. Because the chip is soldered, core count, graphics tier and memory size are fixed at purchase.

Who BGA 1440 serves
BGA 1440 processors belong in 15 inch and 17 inch performance laptops where sustained clocks matter: entry gaming systems, mobile workstations and creator laptops with dual fan cooling. The 45 W base with a 35 W down configuration lets makers tune the same silicon for thin performance bodies or thicker workstation chassis.
Within Comet Lake-H the choice runs from 4-core Core i5 parts for mainstream performance through 6-core Core i7 parts for mixed work to 8-core Core i7 and Core i9 parts for rendering and compilation. Graphics stay Intel UHD across the range, so buyers who play or create with heavy 3D should plan on a discrete GPU. Office buyers can rely on the integrated GPU for triple display output through eDP, DisplayPort and HDMI.
Memory and PCIe
Memory support covers DDR4 SODIMM modules on most gaming boards plus soldered variants on thin designs. Comet Lake-H reaches DDR4-2933 with up to 128 GB across two channels, while Coffee Lake-H tops out at DDR4-2666. Bandwidth peaks near 45.8 GB per sec on Comet Lake-H with matched modules. ECC is not offered on these consumer mobile parts, so workstation buyers who need error correction should look at Xeon W mobile parts on the same package.
PCIe arrives as version 3.0 with up to 16 lanes from the CPU, wired as x16, x8 plus x8, or x8 plus x4 plus x4 for graphics and NVMe. Laptop designs typically give the full link to a discrete GPU or split it between graphics and a fast SSD. Storage through the chipset adds SATA and extra NVMe options. Gen4 drives run at Gen3 speed here, which still covers game loads and large photo libraries.
Identifying and servicing BGA 1440
Identification is simple in Intel documents: Sockets Supported reads FCBGA1440 and Package Size reads 42mm x 28mm. That line separates BGA 1440 from LGA 1200 desktop parts, which read FCLGA1200 at 37.5mm x 37.5mm, and from later BGA 1744 mobile parts at 50 x 25 mm. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains why soldered packages cannot move between boards.
Service follows laptop practice rather than desktop practice. There is no retention bracket, no pin grid to inspect and no aftermarket mounting pattern to match. Repasting and fan cleaning follow the laptop maker manual, and board replacement is the only path when the processor fails. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where to find the socket line in maker specifications.

Frequently asked questions
Can a BGA 1440 processor be replaced or upgraded?
No. The processor is soldered to the board. Upgrading means replacing the board or the whole laptop, so choose core count, memory size and graphics tier at order time.
What is the difference between BGA 1440 and BGA 1744?
BGA 1440 at 42 × 28 mm serves 45 W performance laptops with 4 to 8 cores plus PCIe 3.0. BGA 1744 at 50 × 25 mm serves later hybrid mobile processors with PCIe Gen5. The two packages do not interchange.
Does BGA 1440 use DDR4 or DDR5?
Boards use DDR4 SODIMM modules or soldered LPDDR3, depending on the design. Comet Lake-H tops out at DDR4-2933, while Coffee Lake-H tops out at DDR4-2666. Two channels carry up to 128 GB on Comet Lake-H.
Does BGA 1440 support PCIe Gen4?
PCIe 3.0 with up to 16 lanes from the CPU for graphics and storage plus extra lanes through the mobile chipset. Exact slot wiring follows the laptop or board design, so check the maker specifications for NVMe speed.
