What the Xeon E-2286M is

The Xeon E-2286M tops the mobile Xeon E line with eight cores and sixteen threads. It launched in the second quarter of 2019 with a 2.4 GHz base and up to 5.0 GHz boost at 45 W. Intel positions it for mobile workstations that need desktop thread counts on the road.

Sixteen megabytes of Smart Cache feed rendering and compilation across sixteen threads. The low base stretches thermals in laptop bodies, while boost and Thermal Velocity Boost lift single thread peaks to 5.0 GHz. Sixteen threads keep design and solver tasks apart during travel.

UHD Graphics P630 from 350 MHz to 1.25 GHz drives laptop panels and docked monitors. The process is 14 nm and the multiplier is locked. ECC memory in two channels suits field work where errors would waste days.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The E-2286M solders to BGA 1440 permanently. Makers tune the 45 W envelope with shared CPU and GPU heat pipes and a 35 W down option for thinner bodies. There is no socketed upgrade path.

Memory is DDR4-2666 or LPDDR3-2133 in two channels up to 128 GB with ECC where boards wire it. Mobile workstation vendors qualify ECC SO-DIMM kits per model. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where specs list FCBGA1440.

BGA 1528 thin laptop packages cannot take this 45 W chip. Power and contacts differ. Replacement means a new laptop, so order memory for the life of the machine.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 SO-DIMMs up to 128 GB with ECC cover mobile workstation use. Dual channel operation helps both CPU and P630 graphics. Start with 32 GB where large assemblies travel.

PCIe 3.0 with up to 16 lanes from the CPU feeds a mobile Quadro and NVMe storage. Typical designs split lanes between graphics and fast SSD. Board layouts fix the split, so check the maker diagram.

Cooling is custom per laptop for 45 W plus discrete graphics. Sustained all core work settles near base clocks in compact chassis. No retail pattern exists, and service follows the maker manual.

Upgrade paths

Soldered BGA blocks CPU changes. Larger NVMe drives and memory where slots allow extend service life. Battery replacement restores travel time.

The Intel Xeon E-2276M offers six cores at the same 45 W on the same BGA 1440 family for lower cost. Desktop towers can use LGA 1151 Xeon E parts for higher clocks where portability is not needed.

Past BGA 1440 a new laptop is required. The E-2286M covers mobile flagship work where eight cores with ECC must travel.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Intel Xeon E-2286M use?

It uses BGA 1440 soldered to the mobile workstation board.

How many cores does the E-2286M have?

Eight cores with Hyper-Threading give sixteen threads. Base is 2.4 GHz with boost to 5.0 GHz.

Can the E-2286M be upgraded?

No. It solders directly, so board or laptop replacement is the only path.

What memory does the E-2286M support?

DDR4-2666 or LPDDR3-2133 ECC in two channels up to 128 GB.

When did the E-2286M launch?

May 2019 in the second quarter of 2019.
