What the Core i9-10885H is

The Core i9-10885H is an eight core, sixteen thread Comet Lake-H mobile processor with vPro support. It launched in the second quarter of 2020 for mobile workstations with a 2.4 GHz base and up to 5.3 GHz Velocity Boost. It matches the 10980HK on clocks while adding business management and dropping the unlocked multiplier.

Sixteen megabytes of Smart Cache cover CAD, simulation and photo work across eight cores. The 45 W rating with a 35 W down mode fits 15 and 17 inch workstation bodies with ISV certified drivers on the board side. All core sustained clocks sit below the headline boost, as with all dense H parts.

UHD Graphics 630 with a 1.25 GHz burst drive the internal panel and external monitors for desk use. Discrete Quadro or Radeon Pro GPUs take over for 3D. The vPro platform needs a QM480 or WM490 board plus maker firmware.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 10885H solders to BGA 1440 on mobile workstation boards. There is no socketed version. Makers validate ECC style board reliability and long driver support rather than benchmark peaks.

Memory is dual SODIMM for growth to 128 GB on large workstations. Thunderbolt 3 on premium boards adds docks and external storage. The How to find your CPU socket type guide points to the package line in maker specs.

Desktop LGA 1200 boards cannot host the chip despite shared Comet Lake naming. The mobile power map and management firmware differ.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2933 in two channels up to 128 GB is the rated laptop memory. Workstation builds favor 32 or 64 GB for assemblies and point clouds. Matched pairs keep bandwidth near 45.8 GB per sec.

PCIe 3.0 x16 from the CPU serves workstation graphics and NVMe. A typical build pairs the chip with a Quadro T series GPU and a 1 TB NVMe SSD. Chipset lanes add networking, smart card and extra storage.

Cooling is a workstation tuned dual fan assembly for 45 W with quiet office modes. The 35 W down configuration helps thin models. Service is fan cleaning and repaste per maker guide.

Upgrade paths

Soldered packaging means no CPU step. Memory expansion, larger NVMe and a Thunderbolt dock are the workstation upgrades. ISV driver updates extend the useful life for CAD releases.

A laptop change to BGA 1744 hybrid mobile brings newer media engines. Inside BGA 1440, the Intel Core i7-10870H offers similar 8-core throughput without vPro.
