What the Core m3-8114Y is
The Core m3-8114Y is a two core, four thread mobile processor from the Cannon Lake-Y family. It launched on May 5, 2018 with a 1.5 GHz base and up to 2.2 GHz Turbo at 5 W. Two Palm Cove cores with Hyper-Threading cover fanless tablets and entry ultrabooks where battery life and silence decide the design.
Four megabytes of shared L3 plus 512 KB of L2 feed light office work and browsing. The 1.5 GHz base keeps sustained power near 5 W, while 2.2 GHz burst lifts taps and page loads. The die measures 70.52 mm2 on the 10 nm process, Intel's first 10 nm mobile silicon to ship.
UHD Graphics from 300 MHz to 900 MHz drives laptop displays with 4K output at 60 Hz. Unlike the Core i3-8121U on the same generation with disabled graphics, the 8114Y keeps its graphics engine enabled for fanless bodies. DirectX 12 support covers office visuals and streaming.
Intel positions Y parts for 5 W envelopes against U parts at 15 W. The 8114Y production status is end of life, so buyers meet it only on the used market in a small set of 2018 designs. Locked multiplier keeps tuning out of scope.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 8114Y solders to BGA 1440 and cannot be replaced. Board choice fixes processor, memory pace and graphics for the life of the laptop. Thin bodies pair it with DDR4 in two channels for low standby power.
It appeared in a small set of 2018 fanless laptops with modest cooling, since 5 W needs only a spreader. Buyers today should check battery health on used units, since sealed bodies complicate service. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where specs list the BGA package.
The Core i3-8121U Intel Core i3-8121U on the same package is the nearby Cannon Lake part with disabled graphics and a discrete GPU requirement. The 8114Y is the integrated graphics alternative for thinner bodies.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4 up to 2400 MT/s in two channels with up to 38.4 GB per sec of bandwidth is the memory support. Two channels matter for graphics, so paired operation runs smoother than single channel. ECC is not supported on this consumer mobile part.
Ten PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU wire SSDs and board devices in fanless layouts. Laptop designs typically give four lanes to storage. Speeds cover boot and documents rather than large arrays.
Five watts cool passively with a spreader to the case. Maximum case temperature of 72 C guides maker thermal design. No fan means no dust failures, and battery plus display swaps are the main service items.
Upgrade paths
There is no CPU upgrade on soldered BGA 1440. The 8114Y stays with its board for life. Storage cleaning and OS updates extend use more than hardware changes.
Past this generation the path is a new laptop on a later low power platform with more cores and faster memory. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains soldered laptop limits. Collectors value the 8114Y as an early 10 nm shipment rather than an upgrade target.
