AM5 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
AM5 is AMD's desktop socket for the Ryzen 7000 series, introduced in September 2022 and still current. It is also the first AMD mainstream desktop socket built as a land grid array. The 1,718 contacts sit in the motherboard socket, and the processor has flat pads, which is the layout Intel has used on its mainstream desktops for years. AMD's previous socket, AM4, had its pins on the processor.

Overview
The socket accepts three families of desktop processor: the Ryzen 7000 series (Zen 4, codename Raphael), the Ryzen 8000G processors with integrated Radeon graphics, and the Ryzen 9000 series (Zen 5, codename Granite Ridge). The package keeps the 40 × 40 mm footprint of AM4, so it looks similar from above, but the two sockets are not compatible.
Two other decisions shape every AM5 build. Memory is DDR5 only, with no DDR4 option, and the PCIe lanes from the processor run at PCIe 5.0 speed. AMD also kept the cooler mounting hole pattern of AM4, so many existing coolers carry over with the right bracket.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raphael | Ryzen 7000 series | 2022 to 2023 | The first AM5 generation, built on Zen 4. Includes the X3D models with stacked cache. |
| Phoenix | Ryzen 8000G series | 2024 | Desktop processors with integrated Radeon graphics. |
| Phoenix2 | Ryzen 8000G series (small die) | 2024 | Cost reduced monolithic die with mixed Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores for Ryzen 3 8300G and Ryzen 5 8500G class APUs. Shares the AM5 socket and DDR5 platform with Phoenix, so board support follows the maker CPU list. |
| Granite Ridge | Ryzen 9000 series | 2024 onward | Built on Zen 5. Works on 600 series boards after a BIOS update. |
| Gorgon Point | Ryzen AI 400G series (consumer and PRO) | 2026 | Desktop APUs with Zen 5, RDNA 3.5 graphics and an XDNA 2 NPU for Copilot+ desktops, launched March 2026 in 65 W G and 35 W GE versions, OEM systems only. AMD lists A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E as supporting chipsets; per-codename BIOS status is not recorded here, so check the board maker's CPU support list. |
| Grado | EPYC 4005 series | 2025 | Zen 5 server processors for single-socket entry servers on AM5, from 6 to 16 cores. Launched May 13, 2025 with ECC DDR5-5600 and PCIe 5.0 x28 from the CPU. Server boards use platform firmware rather than desktop chipsets, so per-board CPU lists govern fit. |
Chipsets for AM5
800 series
X870E and X870 arrived in late 2024 for the Ryzen 9000 processors, with B850 and B840 following in 2025.
| Chipset | Segment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X870E | Enthusiast | The top tier. USB4 is standard. |
| X870 | High-end | USB4 is standard. |
| B850 | Mainstream | PCIe 5.0 for the main M.2 slot is required of board makers. |
| B840 | Entry | Entry level, with features close to A620. |
600 series
Launched with the first Ryzen 7000 processors in 2022.
| Chipset | Segment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X670E | Enthusiast | PCIe 5.0 for both the graphics slot and storage. |
| X670 | High-end | |
| B650E | Performance | Adds PCIe 5.0 for the graphics slot. |
| B650 | Mainstream | Allows CPU overclocking. |
| A620 | Entry | No CPU overclocking. |
What the LGA design changes
On AM4 the fragile part was the processor, because bending a pin meant a damaged chip. On AM5 the fragile part moves to the motherboard, where bent contacts can ruin the board. The processor sits in a socket with a retention arm and a load plate, which holds it in place and presses it onto the contacts.
The practical advice is to line up the triangle on the corner of the processor with the matching mark on the socket, lower the chip straight in without sliding it, and close the load plate. Never force it. The processor is keyed so that it only fits in one orientation.
Cooler compatibility
AM5 uses mounting holes spaced 54 × 90 mm apart, the same pattern as AM4, and the same height above the board. Cooler makers state that AM4 coolers carry over in most cases. The exception is any cooler that comes with its own backplate, because AM5 boards have a fixed backplate that cannot be removed. Those coolers need a mounting kit made for AM5.
Before reusing a cooler, check the maker's compatibility list for AM5, and confirm that the cooler's contact plate covers the heat spreader, which has a distinctive shape. Large air coolers and liquid coolers of recent years normally list AM5 support.
Memory and PCIe
AM5 supports DDR5 only. Official speeds depend on the processor: the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is rated for DDR5-5200 and the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X for DDR5-5600 with two modules. AMD's EXPO profiles let compatible kits run faster, with a setting in the BIOS.
The processors provide 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes, and 24 of them are usable for devices such as the graphics card and NVMe drives. Which slots run at PCIe 5.0 depends on the board and its chipset, as the notes in the chipset tables show.
How long AM5 will be supported
AMD said at Computex in June 2026 that it would support the AM5 platform through 2029. Reports based on AMD documentation also list the next desktop generation, codenamed Olympic Ridge, as AM5 compatible. When this page was checked, no processor of that generation had been released, so treat it as a plan and not a product.
For a buyer the useful part is the direction of travel. AM4 stayed on sale through several Ryzen generations, and AM5 is meant to follow that pattern. The previous socket is covered on the AM4 page.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit the AM5 socket?
Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 9000 desktop processors. AM4 processors do not fit.
Does AM5 support DDR4 memory?
No. AM5 is a DDR5 only platform.
Will my AM4 cooler fit an AM5 motherboard?
Often yes, because the mounting holes match. Coolers that bring their own backplate do not fit, since the AM5 backplate is fixed to the board.
Do 600 series boards work with Ryzen 9000?
Yes, after a BIOS update on boards built before the Ryzen 9000 launch. Boards from the 800 series support them out of the box.
Is AM5 a PGA or an LGA socket?
AM5 is an LGA socket with 1,718 contacts. The contacts are on the motherboard, not on the processor.
