What the Ryzen AI 5 PRO 440G is

The Ryzen AI 5 PRO 440G is the 6-core desktop APU of the Gorgon Point generation, launched on March 2, 2026 for OEM business systems. Three Zen 5 cores plus three Zen 5c cores give 12 threads at 2.0 GHz base and up to 4.8 GHz boost, with 6 MB of L2 and 16 MB of L3 cache. Graphics are 4 RDNA 3.5 compute units as Radeon 840M at up to 2900 MHz, and the XDNA 2 NPU offers up to 50 TOPS at 1.9 GHz. Default TDP is 65 W on TSMC 4 nm.

Like its 8-core 450G sibling, the 440G carries mobile Gorgon Point silicon into a socketed AM5 package with DDR5 memory. The 50 TOPS NPU earns Copilot+ certification with at least 16 GB of system memory. AMD positions the 6-core G parts below the 450G for lower cost commercial desktops that still need AI acceleration and solid integrated graphics.

PRO branding adds business manageability and security features such as memory guard for fleet deployment. There is no boxed retail version: the 440G ships only inside OEM commercial systems, which arrived in the second quarter of 2026.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 440G plugs into a standard AM5 socket with 1,718 contacts, so it can be replaced or serviced unlike its soldered mobile cousins. AMD lists A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E chipsets as supporting, covering the 600 and 800 series families. Boards built before March 2026 need a BIOS that knows the APU, so the board maker's CPU support list and minimum BIOS version decide before purchase.

The 65 W rating fits ordinary commercial desktops and their power delivery. The multiplier is locked, and tuning means memory profiles and power limits rather than frequency records.

The 35 W AMD Ryzen AI 5 PRO 440GE is the efficiency twin for small form factor systems, with identical cores, graphics and clocks.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR5 UDIMM only over two channels to 256 GB: DDR5-5600 with two modules and DDR5-3600 with four populated slots, with ECC where the board enables it. There is no DDR4 option on AM5, and Copilot+ needs at least 16 GB in the system.

PCIe follows the Gorgon AM5 platform at version 4.0 with 16 total lanes and 12 usable, for graphics and NVMe storage per board split. Most commercial systems rely on the integrated 840M graphics with a fast SSD, which keeps cost, power and noise down.

Cooling comes from the system builder since no retail box exists. The 65 W rating suits compact business air coolers, and the 95 degree maximum junction matches the other G-series parts. Any AM5 rated cooler with the 54 × 90 mm mounting pattern fits; see the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide.

Platform and positioning

AMD aims the 6-core PRO G parts at office fleets, call centers and kiosks that need AI features without heat, noise or discrete cards. The NPU runs Copilot+ locally, the 840M drives modern displays, and six threads cover productivity with headroom. Against the 8-core 450G the 440G saves budget for seats that never touch heavy creation.

Business buyers should compare complete OEM systems on warranty, service and chassis rather than the APU alone, since the processor only ships inside them.

Upgrade paths

On AM5 the 440G can move to faster socketed processors on a supporting board, subject to BIOS, including chiplet Ryzen parts with more cores. Any such move needs to budget cooling and usually a discrete GPU.

The soldered mobile PRO range on FP8 covers laptops, where no socket swap exists at all.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Ryzen AI 5 PRO 440G use?

It uses AM5, an LGA socket with 1,718 contacts. It is socketed and replaceable.

Does the 440G work on a B650 motherboard?

Yes, after a BIOS update on boards built before its March 2026 launch. Check the board maker's CPU support list for the minimum version.

Does the 440G support DDR4?

No. AM5 boards use DDR5 only.

Can the 440G be bought as a boxed retail processor?

No. It ships only inside OEM business systems, with cooling supplied by the system builder.
