Recommended GPU pairing

Recommended tierHigh-end 1440p
Example GPUsGeForce RTX 4070, Radeon RX 7800 XT
Target resolution1440p high settings

Eight Zen 4 cores with stacked 3D V-Cache, PCIe 5.0 lanes and DDR5-5200 keep up with high-end 1440p cards from 2023. The RTX 4070 from April 2023 and the RX 7800 XT from September 2023 match that class in most titles.

This is a rough match for a new build at the stated resolution, not a limit. A faster card still works and helps at higher resolutions or in games that load the GPU more than the CPU. A slower card is fine for lighter games and office use. The exact balance shifts with the game, the settings and the resolution, so no percentage is given.

What the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is an eight core, sixteen thread processor that AMD released in April 2023. It belongs to the Ryzen 7000 series, codenamed Raphael, and uses the Zen 4 core design. Its feature is the 3D V-Cache: a 64 MB cache die stacked on top of the compute die, which brings the total L3 cache to 96 MB. The 8 MB of L2 is separate and sits with the cores.

The clock speeds are lower than on the non-X3D models of the family, at 4.2 GHz base and 5.0 GHz boost. AMD lists a 120 W default TDP and a maximum operating temperature of 89 °C. The compute die is made on TSMC's 5 nm process, and the I/O die is on 6 nm.

The processor includes basic Radeon graphics with two compute units, so a display works without a graphics card. AMD does not include a cooler in the box. The launch price was $449.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D goes into an AM5 socket, which has 1,718 contacts on the motherboard. AMD's own list of supported chipsets for this processor covers the whole family: A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E. Because the processor launched in 2023, boards from the 600 series and the 800 series both start with it.

No chipset gives it an unlocked multiplier, because the chip's multiplier is locked. What changes between chipsets is the I/O: how many PCIe 5.0 lanes the board exposes, whether USB4 is available and how many storage slots are included. The cheapest boards of the A620 type also leave out CPU overclocking features, which matters less for a chip whose multiplier is locked anyway.

The AM4 processors from before do not fit the socket, since it is a different design with the contacts in the board. AM5 is covered in detail on its own page.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR5 at up to 5200 MT/s with two modules, and AMD's EXPO profiles allow faster kits to run at their rated speed. There is no DDR4 option on AM5, so modules from an older system cannot be reused.

The processor provides 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes, with 24 of them usable for devices. Which slots on the board run at PCIe 5.0 depends on the board and its chipset, as the chipset tables on the socket page show.

The mounting holes follow the same 54 × 90 mm pattern as AM4, which means many AM4 coolers carry over. Coolers that bring their own backplate do not fit, because AM5 boards have a fixed backplate. Because AMD includes no cooler, the choice is yours. A 120 W default TDP is manageable with a good tower cooler, and the chip's 89 °C limit is by design, so do not read it as a fault. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide has the mounting details.

Upgrade paths

Within AM5 the chip can be replaced by newer processors on the same board, subject to BIOS support. The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is a Ryzen 9000 model that fits the same socket, and on 600 series boards it needs a BIOS update. AMD has said it will support the platform through 2029.

Coming from AM4, a move to this processor means a new board, new DDR5 memory and a new processor, and the cooler may carry over.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D use?

It uses AM5, an LGA socket with 1,718 contacts.

Does the Ryzen 7 7800X3D work on an A620 motherboard?

Yes. A620 is on AMD's list of supported chipsets for the 7800X3D.

Does the Ryzen 7 7800X3D support DDR4 memory?

No. AM5 boards use DDR5 only.

Does the Ryzen 7 7800X3D come with a cooler?

No. You need to buy a cooler that supports AM5.

Will my AM4 cooler fit?

Often yes, because the mounting holes match. Coolers that replace the motherboard backplate do not fit AM5 boards.
