BGA 1264 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

BGA 1264 is Intel's soldered ball grid array package for the Atom x7000FE Amston Lake embedded family. It carries 1,264 balls in the FCBGA1264 package measuring 35 × 24 mm. Intel lists both batch parts, the 4-core x7433FE and the 8-core x7835FE, with FCBGA1264 as the supported socket and October 2025 as the launch window.

Overview

The package pairs Gracemont E-cores with UHD Graphics 32EU and a small I/O complement: single-channel DDR4, DDR5 or LPDDR5 up to 4800 MT/s and 9 lanes of PCIe 3.0. That balance suits fanless gateways, kiosks, HMIs and network appliances where a 9 to 12 W envelope matters more than peak throughput. The TjMax of 105 degrees C gives headroom for enclosed chassis.

Like every soldered Intel BGA package, BGA 1264 trades replacement for integration. The chip cannot be swapped, cooling is part of the board design for the configured TDP, and Intel backs the FE embedded SKUs with embedded lifecycle support. When a design needs more cores or lanes than 8 Gracemont cores and x9 Gen 3 allow, a larger socketed platform on LGA 1700 carries the Bartlett Lake embedded range instead.

A soldered package for small boards

BGA 1264 follows the same rule as every BGA package on this site: the processor is soldered once at the factory and stays with the board for life. There are no pins to bend and no lever to lift, but there is also no CPU upgrade path. An embedded designer qualifies one SKU for the whole production run, and a buyer lives with the chosen core count. Intel marks both parts as embedded vertical segment with tray supply.

The package choice shapes the board more than buyers expect. The 35 × 24 mm FCBGA1264 footprint needs its own layout, and the single-channel memory decision is fixed per board between DDR4, DDR5 and LPDDR5. Compatibility still depends on firmware, so a board revision needs a BIOS that knows the Amston Lake stepping.

Memory, expansion and cooling

Memory on BGA 1264 is a board decision with three valid answers. Cost-sensitive designs use DDR4-3200, mainstream designs use DDR5, and power-sensitive designs solder LPDDR5 up to 4800 MT/s. Capacity tops out at 32 GB on a single channel with up to 38.4 GB per second of bandwidth. ECC is not part of these two SKUs, so designs that need error correction step up to a larger embedded platform.

Expansion comes from 9 lanes of PCIe 3.0 plus USB, eDP, DP, HDMI and MIPI display outputs with 4K support and triple-display capability. The lanes usually split between NVMe boot storage and wired networking, with the exact split fixed per board. Boards that need more than the SoC offers cannot add a discrete chipset lane budget, so the block diagram of the exact board decides real expansion.

Cooling has no retail answer on BGA 1264. The same package spans the 9 W x7433FE and the 12 W x7835FE, and the heatsink or spreader is drawn for the configured TDP of that product. The 105 degree junction limit suits passively cooled enclosures with careful airflow, and mounting pressure follows the board maker specification rather than a cooler maker socket list.

Where BGA 1264 designs are used

BGA 1264 covers volume embedded designs: IoT gateways, retail and kiosk terminals, HMIs, thin clients and light network appliances. The Atom x7000FE stack scales from 4 cores at 9 W to 8 cores at 12 W in one package, with UHD Graphics covering kiosk displays without a discrete card. Boards come from embedded vendors with long-life supply for industrial qualification.

Desktop and tower builders meet higher embedded performance on LGA 1700 instead, where Bartlett Lake Core 3, 5 and 7 parts take socketed boards with DDR4 or DDR5 and ECC options. BGA 1264 stays the small-board home of Amston Lake. Designs that outgrow 8 Gracemont cores or need ECC move to that socketed range.

Frequently asked questions

Can a BGA 1264 processor be replaced or upgraded?

No. The processor is soldered to the board in the FCBGA1264 package. Upgrading means replacing the board or module, so choose core count and memory at design time.

Which processors fit BGA 1264?

Atom x7000FE Amston Lake parts: the 4-core x7433FE at 9 W and the 8-core x7835FE at 12 W in this batch. Both use Gracemont E-cores with UHD Graphics and launch in October 2025.

What memory does BGA 1264 use?

DDR4, DDR5 and LPDDR5 in a single channel, up to 4800 MT/s and up to 32 GB. The board design fixes the memory type, so check the vendor list before committing.

Does BGA 1264 support PCIe Gen 4 or Gen 5?

PCIe Gen 3 with x9 lanes from the CPU. That lane budget suits NVMe boot storage, gigabit networking and expansion on small embedded boards rather than large arrays.
