What the Xeon E-2246G is

The Xeon E-2246G balances six cores with Hyper-Threading for twelve threads at moderate clocks. It launched in May 2019 with a 3.6 GHz base and up to 4.8 GHz boost at 80 W. Intel positions it for CAD towers that need thread headroom without 95 W heat.

Twelve megabytes of Smart Cache feed modeling and compile jobs across twelve threads. The strong base clock sustains all core work, while boost lifts single thread interaction. Twelve threads keep design apps and background sync apart.

UHD Graphics P630 from 350 MHz to 1.2 GHz handles office displays so the PCIe slot stays free for other cards. The process is 14 nm and the multiplier is locked. ECC memory support protects project data during long sessions.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The E-2246G fits LGA 1151 on revision 2 boards only. C246 boards pair it with ECC UDIMMs and display outputs for P630. Builders who later add a workstation GPU can keep integrated graphics for extra monitors.

Mid 2019 BIOS versions include E-2200 IDs. Early stock may need an update. Revision 1 boards never boot it. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains the chipset generations.

Single socket towers are the expected home. There is no second socket, so larger thread counts mean Xeon Scalable platforms.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 128 GB suit design and light server use. Matched pairs give dual channel bandwidth for assemblies and virtual machines. Plan 32 GB or more where hosts share resources.

Sixteen Gen3 CPU lanes can hold a workstation GPU, fast NIC or NVMe carrier. P630 graphics cover displays when the slot holds compute or network cards. Chipset lanes add SATA and USB around the CPU links.

Cooling follows the 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern in the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. An 80 W tower holds boost during renders. Maintain airflow in towers where storage stacks trap heat.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, the Intel Xeon E-2276G raises clocks to 3.8 GHz base at the same 80 W for faster interaction. The Intel Xeon E-2236 drops graphics for headless nodes where a BMC handles display. Both fit C242 and C246 after a BIOS check.

Consumer i7-8700 gives similar threads without ECC for gaming builds. It lacks correction for production work.

Past LGA 1151 later Xeon E families use LGA 1200. The E-2246G covers balanced CAD towers where six cores with graphics and ECC must last.
