What the Xeon E-2278G is

The Xeon E-2278G pairs eight cores with Hyper-Threading for sixteen threads at a modest 80 W. It launched in May 2019 with a 3.4 GHz base and up to 5.0 GHz boost. Intel positions it for workstations that need eight cores without the 95 W heat of the flagship.

Sixteen megabytes of Smart Cache feed parallel builds and renders across sixteen threads. The balanced base clock sustains all core work in compact towers. Boost to 5.0 GHz keeps single thread interaction level with faster SKUs.

UHD Graphics P630 from 350 MHz to 1.2 GHz covers office displays so the PCIe slot can hold other cards. The process is 14 nm and the multiplier is locked. ECC memory protects long jobs. Note that some list data shows 95 W for this SKU, while Intel ARK lists 80 W, and this page uses the manufacturer 80 W value.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The E-2278G fits LGA 1151 on revision 2 boards only. C246 workstation boards combine ECC UDIMMs with display outputs for P630 and power stages rated for sustained boosts. Makers list it with shipping BIOS from mid 2019.

Early C246 stock may need an update for E-2200 IDs. Revision 1 boards never boot it. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains the chipset split.

Single socket towers are the home for this SKU. There is no second socket, so larger core counts mean Xeon Scalable platforms.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 128 GB suit eight core towers. Matched pairs give dual channel bandwidth for virtual machines and large scenes. Start with 32 GB where hosts share memory.

Sixteen Gen3 CPU lanes can hold a workstation GPU or NVMe array while P630 handles side monitors. Many builds use integrated graphics for documentation displays and a discrete card for 3D. Chipset lanes add the remaining storage and networking.

Cooling uses the 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. An 80 W tower holds boost under sustained loads. Keep airflow open where a GPU shares the case.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, the Intel Xeon E-2288G adds higher clocks at 95 W for top single thread speed. The Intel Xeon E-2276G trims to six cores at 80 W for lower cost. Both share C242 and C246 after a BIOS check.

Consumer i9-9900 gives eight cores without ECC for gaming towers. It lacks correction for production data.

Past LGA 1151 newer Xeon E families need LGA 1200. The E-2278G covers efficient eight core work where 80 W with graphics and ECC must last.
