What the Xeon E-2124G is
The Xeon E-2124G is a four core, four thread workstation processor with a 3.4 GHz base and up to 4.5 GHz turbo. It carries 8 MB of Smart Cache and a 71 W TDP on the 14 nm process. Intel announced it on July 12, 2018 with the E-2100 series for entry workstations that need display output.
UHD Graphics P630 runs from 350 MHz base to 1.15 GHz max for setup displays and triple office outputs. That removes the discrete card from basic CAD viewing towers. The multiplier is locked at 34 times the 100 MHz base clock.
ECC memory support corrects single bit errors during long jobs. Launch pricing is left out here because ARK and launch lists disagree between $213 and $249. Four cores cover single threaded CAD where clocks matter more than threads.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The E-2124G fits LGA 1151 revision 2 on workstation boards with the C242 and C246 chipsets. Consumer 300 series boards are not the target, since ECC wiring lives on the workstation boards. Check the board maker CPU list for the exact E-2124G before ordering.
It does not fit 100 or 200 series boards, which are revision 1 for 6th and 7th Gen chips. Boards with display outputs suit this G SKU, since the P630 feeds them directly. A discrete card still fits the x16 slot where a workstation GPU is needed.
Boards sold after mid 2018 accept it with the shipping BIOS where the maker lists the part. The Intel Xeon E-2124 is the graphics free twin on the same boards for towers that already include a card.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory support is DDR4-2666 in two channels up to 128 GB, with ECC correcting single bit errors. Two matched ECC UDIMMs give dual channel speed with error cover. The P630 shares system memory, so dual channel mode also helps display smoothness.
PCI Express arrives as version 3.0 with 16 lanes from the CPU for graphics and storage. A workstation card and an NVMe drive fit the lane budget of an entry tower. Cooling uses the shared 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern at 71 W.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket the step up is an eight thread E part such as the Xeon E-2144G where threads matter, keeping the board and ECC DDR4. The E-2124G keeps its place where a fast quad core with graphics covers viewing stations.
Moving past LGA 1151 means a new board on a current workstation platform. Owners usually add ECC memory or storage before replacing the processor.
Frequently asked questions
