Motherboard and chipset compatibility
Intel Xeon E-2124 needs a motherboard with a LGA 1151 socket. The table shows which chipset series accept it.

What the Xeon E-2124 is
The Xeon E-2124 is a four core, four thread workstation processor with a 3.3 GHz base and up to 4.3 GHz turbo. It carries 8 MB of Smart Cache and a 71 W TDP on the 14 nm process. Intel announced the E-2100 series on July 12, 2018 for entry workstations with ECC memory.
It has no integrated graphics: the ARK page carries no graphics section and WikiChip confirms no graphics engine. Buyers must fit a separate card even for setup displays. Four cores cover CAD viewing, office servers and light builds where ECC matters more than threads.
ECC memory support corrects single bit errors during long jobs, which is the point of the E series over consumer i5 silicon. The multiplier is locked at 33 times the 100 MHz base clock. Launch pricing is left out here because aggregators split between $193 and $198 with no current ARK figure.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The E-2124 fits LGA 1151 revision 2 on workstation boards with the C242 and C246 chipsets. Consumer 300 series boards are not the target, since ECC wiring and management features live on the workstation boards. Check the board maker CPU list for the exact E-2124 before ordering.
It does not fit 100 or 200 series boards, which are revision 1 for 6th and 7th Gen chips. A graphics card is mandatory, so pick a board with the PCIe x16 slot wired at full speed for the card planned. The Intel Xeon E-2224 is the later quad core successor with higher clocks on newer boards.
Boards sold after mid 2018 accept it with the shipping BIOS where the maker lists the part. Entry workstation towers with a basic Quadro or Radeon Pro card suit single threaded CAD beside ECC safety.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory support is DDR4-2666 in two channels up to 128 GB, with ECC correcting single bit errors. Intel notes the 128 GB level needed a 2019 BIOS update on supporting boards. Two matched ECC UDIMMs give dual channel speed with error cover for long jobs.
PCI Express arrives as version 3.0 with 16 lanes from the CPU for graphics and storage. A workstation card and an NVMe drive fit the lane budget of an entry tower. Cooling uses the shared 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern at 71 W, with boxed parts including a thermal solution.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket the step up is a six core E part such as the Xeon E-2136 where threads matter, keeping the board and ECC DDR4. The E-2124 keeps its place where a fast quad core covers single threaded CAD at lower cost.
Moving past LGA 1151 means a new board on a current workstation platform. Owners usually add ECC memory or a faster workstation card before replacing the processor.
Frequently asked questions
What socket does the Xeon E-2124 use?
It uses LGA 1151 revision 2 on C242 and C246 workstation boards. Consumer 300 series boards are not the target.
How many cores does the E-2124 have?
Four cores and four threads at 3.3 GHz base with up to 4.3 GHz turbo, with 8 MB of cache at 71 W.
Does the E-2124 have integrated graphics?
None. The ARK page carries no graphics section and WikiChip confirms no engine, so a separate card is required even for setup.
What memory does the E-2124 support?
DDR4-2666 in two channels up to 128 GB with ECC for error cover on long jobs. The 128 GB level needed a 2019 BIOS update.
What replaces the E-2124 on newer boards?
The Intel Xeon E-2224 is the later quad core successor with higher clocks. The E-2124 keeps value where its clocks cover the work.
