What the Core i5-7400T is
The Core i5-7400T is a four core, four thread desktop processor from Kaby Lake. It launched in January 2017 with a 2.4 GHz base and up to 3.0 GHz Turbo at 35 W. Four cores in a low power envelope cover small offices and media boxes where quiet operation matters.
Six megabytes of Smart Cache support multitasking across four threads. The low 2.4 GHz base keeps heat down, while 3.0 GHz burst lifts interactive work. Thirty five watts fit thin towers with modest cooling.
HD Graphics 630 from 350 MHz to 1000 MHz drives office displays with 4K output. Hardware decode keeps media loads low. No Hyper-Threading is present, so threads equal cores.
On 14 nm the 7400T serves low power desktops against the 65 W 7400. Makers use it for small form factor fleets. Locked multiplier removes tuning.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 7400T fits LGA 1151 revision 1 only. Two hundred series boards accept it natively, while 100 series may need a BIOS update. Revision 2 boards never support it.
The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers revision matching. Thin mini ITX boards pair it with DDR4 for quiet service.
The Core i5-7400 on the same socket adds clocks at 65 W. The Core i3-7300 is the dual core alternative where cost matters.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4-2133/2400 or DDR3L up to 64 GB in two channels is the support. Dual channel pairs help graphics. SSDs decide boot pace.
Sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes wire graphics or NVMe storage. Office builds use integrated output. Thirty five watt coolers cover the load easily.
The 75 mm pattern shares coolers with LGA 1155, 1150 and LGA 1200.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket Core i5-7500T adds clocks at the same 35 W, while Core i5-7400 adds pace at 65 W. Both reuse board and DDR4.
Past revision 1 a new board is required. Storage upgrades usually come first.
