LGA 1200 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
LGA 1200 is the Intel desktop socket introduced in April 2020 with the 10th Gen Core processors, codenamed Comet Lake. It has 1,200 contacts and was shared by only two generations: Comet Lake and the 11th Gen Rocket Lake that followed in 2021. Intel replaced it with LGA 1700 at the end of 2021.
Quick facts
Overview
The socket grew out of LGA 1151. It has 49 more contacts, uses the same 37.5 × 37.5 mm package, and keeps the 75 mm cooler mounting holes that Intel had used since 2009. The notch that keys the processor sits in a different place, so processors made for LGA 1151 do not fit, and LGA 1200 processors do not fit older boards.
Memory is DDR4 on every LGA 1200 board. Rocket Lake brought PCIe 4.0 from the processor, while Comet Lake stays on PCIe 3.0. This means the processor generation, and not only the board, decides how fast the graphics and SSD links can run.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comet Lake | 10th Gen Core | 2020 | Up to 10 cores. The first generation on the socket, launched with the 400 series chipsets. |
| Rocket Lake | 11th Gen Core | 2021 | Up to 8 cores with PCIe 4.0 from the CPU. Launched with the 500 series chipsets. |
Chipsets for LGA 1200
500 series
Launched with Rocket Lake. Every board in this series accepts both generations.
| Chipset | Segment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Z590 | Enthusiast | Unlocks K-series multipliers and memory overclocking. |
| H570 | Mainstream | |
| B560 | Value | Allows memory overclocking. |
| H510 | Entry | No overclocking. |
| Q570 | Business | |
| W580 | Workstation |
400 series: Z490, H470, Q470, W480
Launched with Comet Lake. These boards can run Rocket Lake after a BIOS update.

| H470 | Mainstream | |
| Q470 | Business | |
| W480 | Workstation |
400 series: B460, H410
The lower end of the 400 series. These two chipsets do not support Rocket Lake at all.
| Chipset | Segment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| B460 | Value | |
| H410 | Entry | No overclocking. |
The split inside the 400 series
Boards with the same socket do not all accept the same processors, and the 400 series shows it. Z490, H470, Q470 and W480 boards can run 11th Gen Rocket Lake processors after a BIOS update. B460 and H410 boards cannot, whatever the BIOS says, because those chipsets do not support the newer generation.
If you plan to buy a board and upgrade to Rocket Lake later, choose a 500 series board, or a Z490, H470, Q470 or W480 board with a confirmed BIOS release. The table above spells out the same rule per chipset.
Cooler compatibility
LGA 1200 keeps the 75 mm square mounting pattern, so coolers made for LGA 1156, 1155, 1150, 1151 and 1200 generally share brackets. A cooler that fits one of those sockets will normally fit this one, which makes reusing an older Intel cooler easy.
The same cooler will not fit LGA 1700 without a new bracket, because that socket moved to a 78 mm pattern. Keep that in mind if you plan to move to a newer platform later and want to carry the cooler over.
Memory and PCIe
All LGA 1200 boards use DDR4. The Intel Core i7-10700K has an official limit of DDR4-2933, and Rocket Lake raised the official speeds for its higher end models. Overclocked memory profiles can run faster on Z-series boards.
Comet Lake provides 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the processor. Rocket Lake moved to PCIe 4.0 with an x16 link plus an extra x4 link for an SSD, but only when the board is wired for it, so check the board specifications if PCIe 4.0 storage matters to you.
Buying or reusing LGA 1200 parts
Intel has since released two newer desktop sockets, and there is no upgrade path beyond Rocket Lake. For a new build it is hard to justify unless the parts are already on hand. For an existing system, the Core i7 and Core i9 chips of the 10th Gen are still capable, and Intel Core i7-10700K is one of the common ones. The upgrade from the 10th Gen to the 11th Gen needs a compatible board, as explained above.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit LGA 1200?
Intel's 10th Gen Comet Lake and 11th Gen Rocket Lake Core desktop processors, along with the Pentium Gold and Celeron models of the 10th Gen that share the socket.
Can a 11th Gen processor run on a B460 board?
No. B460 and H410 boards do not support Rocket Lake. Z490, H470, Q470 and W480 boards can after a BIOS update.
Is LGA 1200 the same as LGA 1151?
No. LGA 1200 has 1,200 contacts, a different notch position and a different electrical layout. Processors for LGA 1151 do not fit.
Can I use an LGA 1151 cooler on LGA 1200?
Yes in most cases. Both sockets use mounting holes 75 mm apart. Check the cooler maker's list if the cooler is very old.
Does LGA 1200 support DDR5?
No. LGA 1200 is a DDR4 platform. DDR5 arrived with LGA 1700.
