What the Celeron G3930 is

The Celeron G3930 is a two core, two thread desktop processor from Kaby Lake. It launched in January 2017 with a fixed 2.9 GHz at 51 W. Two cores cover office towers, point of sale terminals and school PCs where cost decides the build.

Two megabytes of cache feed foreground tasks with updates in the background. The fixed 2.9 GHz gives steady pace for documents and browsing. Fifty one watts fit stock tower cooling without special cases.

HD Graphics 610 drives office monitors with hardware decode for video. No Hyper-Threading is present, so thread count equals core count. The chip suits fleets where many seats need basic pace.

On 14 nm the G3930 is the entry Kaby Lake desktop above the low power T part. Intel listed it near $42 tray pricing for volume buyers. ECC support helps entry servers on validated boards.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The G3930 fits LGA 1151 revision 1 only. B250 and H270 boards accept it natively, while H110 may need a BIOS update for Kaby Lake. Three hundred series boards never support it.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers revision 1 matching. Used board buyers should check the CPU support list for the exact stepping.

The Pentium Intel Pentium G4560 on the same socket adds Hyper-Threading for multitasking. The low power G3930T is the 35 W alternative for small cases.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2133 or DDR3L in two channels up to 64 GB is the support. ECC validates on server style boards for entry reliability. Matched pairs help graphics output.

Sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes wire a single graphics slot or NVMe storage. Office builds use integrated output for two displays. SSDs cover boot speed more than CPU clocks here.

Fifty one watts work with stock 65 W class coolers on the 75 mm pattern. Small towers share coolers with LGA 1155, 1150 and LGA 1200. Dust filters help fleet longevity.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket the move is a Pentium G4600 for threads or a Core i3-7100 for clocks, reusing board and memory. A Core i5-7400 brings four cores where office loads grow.

Beyond revision 1 a new board is required. Most owners add an SSD first, since storage limits office pace more than dual cores.
