What the E1-2150 is

The E1-2150 is a dual core Kabini APU for entry notebooks on Socket FT3. It runs 2 Jaguar cores and 2 threads at a fixed 1.05 GHz with 1 MB of L2 cache. The 28 nm chip targets HP entry laptops from February 2014 with graphics on die.

Fifty megahertz over the E1-2100 is the whole difference, keeping the same HD 8210 graphics and low power envelope. Two cores cover browsing with a document open. Fixed clocks keep behavior steady in shared school machines. The soldered BGA package means the notebook choice locks everything.

Radeon HD 8210 drives the notebook panel with GCN shaders for video playback. DDR3L over one channel feeds cores and graphics. Buyers meet it inside complete HP notebooks where the E1 badge costs the least.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The E1-2150 solders to the board on Socket FT3 and cannot be replaced. Upgrading means replacing the board or the whole notebook, so choose memory at purchase. Boards pair the SoC with SODIMM slots for DDR3L.

FT3 boards wire PCIe 2.0, SATA and USB per notebook design. Socketed AM1 desktops cannot take this BGA chip. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains soldered packages.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR3L over a single channel suits entry notebooks with small SSDs. One SODIMM covers classroom browsing. Single channel operation is fixed by the SoC.

PCIe 2.0 with up to 8 lanes from the SoC serves storage and board devices. Most builds rely on HD 8210 graphics. eMMC or small SSDs match the performance class.

Cooling has no retail mount because the chip solders down. Vendors design spreaders for the low power class. Keep vents clear in classroom carts.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, the AMD E2-3800 moves to four cores at 1.3 GHz with HD 8280 graphics above. The AMD A4-5050 adds 1.55 GHz clocks with HD 8330 further up. All share FT3 boards and DDR3L.

Newer entry portables moved to Beema and Stoney Ridge. The E1-2150 covers early 2014 HP notebooks where a dual core Kabini must cost the least.
