What the Pentium Gold G6600 is

The Pentium Gold G6600 tops the Comet Lake Pentium line with two cores, four threads and a fixed 4.2 GHz clock. It reached the market in the second quarter of 2020 as the budget choice for users who want high single thread clocks without paying for Core i3 boost tables. The design stays on 14 nm with Skylake based cores.

Four megabytes of Smart Cache support the two cores during tab heavy browsing and office multitasking. Hyper-Threading keeps background updates from stalling the foreground app. The lack of Turbo Boost keeps behavior consistent, since 4.2 GHz applies to one core or two.

UHD Graphics 630 with a 1.10 GHz burst drives triple displays for reception and office roles. Quick Sync speeds video conferencing encode and H.264 playback. At 58 W the chip runs cool in small cases, which helps 24 hour kiosk and signage duty.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The G6600 fits LGA 1200 across the 400 and 500 series. Both series post with Comet Lake out of the box. B460, H410, B560 and H510 are the price appropriate partners, with Q470 and Q570 for managed fleets.

The chip needs little from power delivery, so four phase entry boards hold full speed. Z490 and Z590 work as well, though their multiplier controls do not affect this locked SKU. Processors for LGA 1151 do not fit the socket.

Board features matter more than chipset speed here: USB count, display outputs and M.2 slots. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide helps when the same board is expected to host a Core i5 later.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 in dual channel mode up to 128 GB is the rated setup. Two matched sticks give the integrated GPU its best bandwidth. XMP kits above 2666 fall back to the rated speed on this model.

PCIe 3.0 provides 16 CPU lanes for a graphics card and an NVMe SSD. Most G6600 builds use integrated graphics with a SATA or NVMe boot drive, which leaves headroom for a later discrete card. Chipset lanes add storage and expansion.

The LGA 1200 75 mm cooler pattern carries over from LGA 1156 onward. Boxed G6600 processors include a stock cooler adequate for 58 W. Quiet builds can fit a small tower for lower fan speed. See the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide for cross compatibility.

Upgrade paths

Inside LGA 1200 the Core i3-10320 adds boost to 4.6 GHz, and the Core i5-10600 adds six cores to 4.8 GHz. Both keep board and DDR4. The Pentium to Core i5 step transforms compilation and virtual machines.

A platform change to LGA 1700 with a Intel Core i3-12100F is the usual budget gaming route, with new board and cooler bracket. For office duty, a move to an SSD and 16 GB RAM often beats a processor swap.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Pentium Gold G6600 use?

It uses LGA 1200 on 400 and 500 series boards.

Is the G6600 faster than the G6500?

Yes, by 100 MHz at 4.2 GHz. Other specs match.

Does the G6600 have integrated graphics?

Yes, Intel UHD Graphics 630 with triple display support.

What RAM suits the G6600?

Two sticks of DDR4-2666 up to 128 GB in dual channel mode.

Can the G6600 be overclocked?
