What the Xeon Platinum 8180M is

The Xeon Platinum 8180M is a twenty eight core, fifty six thread server processor from Skylake-SP. It launched in July 2017 with a 2.5 GHz base and up to 3.8 GHz Turbo at 205 W. Twenty eight cores cover top dual and octal socket nodes where maximum threads per socket matter.

Thirty eight point five megabytes of L3 cache feed twenty eight cores. The 2.5 GHz base keeps power in check across many cores, while 3.8 GHz Turbo lifts lightly threaded work. Three UPI links scale to eight sockets per system designs.

No integrated graphics ship. Six channel DDR4-2666 ECC up to 1536 GB per socket is the M suffix difference, double the 768 GB of the non M 8180. Forty eight PCIe lanes per CPU handle accelerators and NVMe.

Intel aimed the 8180M at in memory databases that need 1.5 TB per socket. The M suffix commands a premium over the 8180 for large memory support. Locked multiplier keeps data center fleets uniform.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 8180M fits LGA 3647 on C620 Purley boards with BIOS for M suffix large memory SKUs. Board memory topology must support 128 GB DIMMs for 1.5 TB per socket. Check the vendor memory QVL before ordering large DIMMs.

Server boards carry six DDR4 channels and 48 PCIe lanes per CPU for flagship nodes. Power delivery for 205 W sustained loads decides board choice. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers Purley planning.

The Xeon Platinum 8180 on the same socket is the 768 GB counterpart where 1.5 TB is not needed. The Gold 6154 trims cores where cost matters.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 ECC in six channels up to 1536 GB per socket is the M suffix target. Twelve 128 GB DIMMs reach 1.5 TB per socket on qualified boards. Bandwidth peaks near 128 GB per sec with full populations.

PCIe 3.0 with 48 lanes per CPU serves networking and storage. Octal socket UPI topology follows board manuals. NVMe drawers hang off spare lanes.

Two hundred five watts need high flow 2U or liquid cooling with vendor heatsinks. Data center set points decide sustained boost.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 3647 there is no higher Skylake-SP above 28 cores, so growth means Cascade Lake-SP on the same socket where BIOS allows it, with DDR4-2933 and Optane options.

Past LGA 3647 the move is newer Xeon Scalable. Memory expansions usually precede CPU swaps for in memory workloads.
