What the Xeon Platinum 8180 is

The Xeon Platinum 8180 is a twenty eight core, fifty six thread server flagship from Skylake-SP. It launched in July 2017 with a 2.5 GHz base and up to 3.8 GHz Turbo at 205 W. Twenty eight cores cover top dual socket nodes where maximum threads per rack matter.

Thirty eight point five megabytes of L3 cache feed twenty eight cores. The 2.5 GHz base keeps 205 W across many cores, while 3.8 GHz Turbo lifts lightly threaded database tasks. Three UPI links scale to eight sockets.

No integrated graphics are present. Six channel DDR4-2666 ECC up to 768 GB per socket suits virtual farms. Forty eight PCIe lanes per CPU handle networking and NVMe.

Intel priced the 8180 near $10,000 at launch as the Skylake-SP flagship. Clouds that needed maximum threads chose it before later generations. The 8180M variant doubles memory to 1.5 TB per socket for in memory work.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 8180 fits LGA 3647 on C620 Purley boards. Vendor BIOS must list 28 core 205 W SKUs for power delivery. Dual socket pairs scale to 56 cores per 2U node.

Boards expose six memory channels and 48 PCIe lanes per socket for flagship racks. Power stages for 205 W sustained loads decide board choice. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers server generations.

The Xeon Platinum 8180M on the same socket doubles memory to 1536 GB where datasets need it. The Gold 6154 trims cores where cost matters.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 ECC in six channels up to 768 GB per socket is the design. Twelve 64 GB DIMMs reach 768 GB on qualified boards. ECC protects tenants.

PCIe 3.0 with 48 lanes per CPU serves 25 GbE NICs and NVMe shelves. Dual socket UPI links carry socket traffic. Bifurcation follows board manuals.

Two hundred five watts need high flow 2U air or liquid. Data center cooling set points decide sustained all core pace.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 3647 the path is Cascade Lake-SP flagships on the same socket where BIOS allows it, with higher clocks and Optane support.

Past LGA 3647 the move is newer Xeon Scalable. Used 8180 nodes suit labs that want top Skylake-SP threads at low entry cost.
