Motherboard and chipset compatibility
Intel Xeon E-2186G needs a motherboard with a LGA 1151 socket. The table shows which chipset series accept it.
| Series | Chipsets | Support |
|---|---|---|
| C240 series: C242 and C246 | C246, C242 | Works out of the box |
Board makers publish a CPU support list for every model. Check it for your exact board before buying. Chipset details for LGA 1151.

What the Xeon E-2186G is
The Xeon E-2186G is a six core, twelve thread workstation processor with a 3.8 GHz base and up to 4.7 GHz turbo. It carries 12 MB of Smart Cache and a 95 W TDP on the 14 nm process. Intel announced it with the E-2100 series in July 2018 as the fastest six core of the launch.
The 3.8 GHz base tops every other E-2100 chip for sustained single threaded CAD, with turbo covering bursts to 4.7 GHz. Six cores with Hyper-Threading cover rendering beside interactive work. The multiplier is locked at 38 times the base clock.
UHD Graphics P630 runs from 350 MHz to 1.20 GHz for setup displays. Tray packaging is the common supply, with no boxed part widely listed. Launch pricing is omitted here because ARK and launch lists disagree between $450 and $506.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The E-2186G fits LGA 1151 revision 2 on workstation boards with the C242 and C246 chipsets. Consumer 300 series boards are not the target, since ECC wiring lives on the workstation boards. Check the board maker CPU list for the exact E-2186G before ordering.
It does not fit 100 or 200 series boards, which are revision 1 for 6th and 7th Gen chips. The 95 W rating asks for a real tower cooler rather than a stock unit. Boards with display outputs suit this G SKU directly.
Boards sold after mid 2018 accept it with the shipping BIOS where the maker lists the part. The Intel Xeon E-2176G is the 80 W sibling on the same boards with slightly lower clocks.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory support is DDR4-2666 in two channels up to 128 GB, with ECC correcting single bit errors. Two matched ECC UDIMMs give dual channel speed with error cover. The P630 shares system memory, so dual channel mode helps display smoothness.
PCI Express arrives as version 3.0 with 16 lanes from the CPU for graphics and storage. A workstation card and two NVMe drives fit the lane budget of a mid tower. Cooling uses the shared 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern at 95 W.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket there is little above six cores in this board generation, so growth means memory, storage or graphics rather than threads. The E-2186G already tops the stack for clocks, keeping board and ECC DDR4.
Moving past LGA 1151 means a new board on a current workstation platform. Owners usually add ECC memory or a faster workstation card before replacing the processor.
Frequently asked questions
What socket does the Xeon E-2186G use?
It uses LGA 1151 revision 2 on C242 and C246 workstation boards. Consumer 300 series boards are not the target.
How many cores does the E-2186G have?
Six cores with Hyper-Threading give twelve threads at 3.8 GHz base with up to 4.7 GHz turbo, with 12 MB of cache at 95 W.
Which graphics does the E-2186G include?
UHD Graphics P630 from 350 MHz to 1.20 GHz for setup displays and triple outputs without a separate card.
What memory does the E-2186G support?
DDR4-2666 in two channels up to 128 GB with ECC for error cover on long jobs.
How does the E-2186G differ from the E-2176G?
The Intel Xeon E-2176G runs 3.7 GHz base at 80 W on the same boards. The E-2186G adds 100 MHz with a higher TDP.
