LGA 775 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
LGA 775, also called Socket T, is the Intel desktop socket introduced in 2004 with the Prescott generation of the Pentium 4. It has 775 contacts and a 37.5 × 37.5 mm package. Intel's earlier desktop socket, Socket 478, carried its pins on the processor. LGA 775 moved the contacts into the board's socket, where they press against flat pads on the underside of the chip.

Overview
It stayed in use for years and hosted processors with very different designs, from the Pentium 4 and the dual core Pentium D to the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad. Intel moved its mainstream desktop line to LGA 1156 in 2009. LGA 775 was the last Intel desktop socket for which other companies, such as NVIDIA, also made chipsets.
Because the socket spanned several architectures, matching the socket is only the first step. A processor and a board also have to agree on front side bus speed, voltage regulator capability and BIOS support, and the rules differ from one chipset to the next. Always check the board maker's CPU support list for the exact processor model and stepping.

Why the board matters as much as the socket
On LGA 775 the processor does not contain a memory controller. It talks to a separate northbridge chip over the front side bus, and that chip handles memory and graphics. The bus speed rose over the years, from 533 MT/s on early Celeron D chips to 1333 MT/s on mainstream Core 2 models, and a board has to support the speed that the processor was designed for.
That design explains why compatibility varies so much between boards that all carry the same socket. A board for early Pentium 4 chips may not recognise a Core 2 processor, and a quad core chip draws more current than the voltage regulator of a budget board may be able to supply. The BIOS must also know the processor. Read the maker's support list down to the stepping when you buy a used part.
Memory
The chipset, and not the processor, decides the memory type. Early boards used DDR, most Core 2 era boards used DDR2, and some later boards were built for DDR3. Each board has one kind of slot, and the modules are not interchangeable between types. Open the board's manual before ordering memory for it.
Cooler mounting
LGA 775 coolers mount on holes spaced 72 mm apart, which differs from the 75 mm pattern used by Intel's later sockets from LGA 1156 onward. Intel's boxed coolers of the period locked in with four push pins that pass through the board. Many modern aftermarket coolers do not include an LGA 775 bracket, so check the cooler maker's compatibility list before buying one for an old system.
A processor from this era such as the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 has a thermal rating of 95 W or 105 W depending on the stepping, so a cooler of modest size is enough when airflow is reasonable.

Frequently asked questions
Is LGA 775 the same as Socket T?
Yes. Socket T and Socket 775 are other names for the same socket. Intel's own documents write LGA775.
Which processors fit LGA 775?
Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron D, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad models, among others. Whether a particular processor runs on a particular board depends on the chipset and BIOS.
Will any LGA 775 motherboard run a Core 2 Quad?
No. The board needs a chipset, BIOS and voltage regulator that support the processor. Intel's 3 series and 4 series chipsets are the usual match for the Core 2 Quad Q6600.
Does LGA 775 use DDR3?
Only on boards that have DDR3 slots. Some LGA 775 boards use DDR2 and early ones used DDR, so the board decides.
Do modern coolers fit LGA 775?
Often not. The mounting holes are 72 mm apart, and many current coolers only list newer sockets. Look for LGA 775 in the cooler's compatibility list.
