What the Pentium E5300 is

The Intel Pentium E5300 is a 2.6 GHz budget dual core from November 30, 2008. It runs two Wolfdale cores at 2.6 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 2 MB of shared L2 on a 45 nm process with 228 million transistors. Power is rated at 65 W on LGA 775.

The E5300 stepped the Pentium line up in steppings SLB9U, SLGQ6 and SLGTL on an 800 MT/s bus with a locked 13x multiplier. Early steppings lack VT-x and SSE4, while the later SLGTL stepping adds VT-x. The die measures 82 mm².

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The E5300 drops into LGA 775 boards with DDR2 or DDR3 memory and a BIOS that lists late-2008 Pentium dual cores, such as G31 and G41 boards. It pairs with value 3 and 4 series chipsets. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 and DDR3 through the board chipset in two channels.

An 800 MT/s front side bus ties the CPU to the chipset. PCIe Gen 2 slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling is any 65 W rated LGA 775 heatsink on the 72.5 × 72.5 mm mount, with Enhanced SpeedStep trimming draw at idle.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 775 the upgrade is the Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 at 2.533 GHz with 3 MB of cache, or the Intel Pentium E5200 at 2.5 GHz for a cheaper Pentium. Beyond LGA 775 a move to a newer platform needs a new board and memory.
