LGA 2011-v3 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
LGA 2011-v3 is Intel land grid array socket with 2011 contacts for high end desktops. The processor package measures 52.5 × 45 mm and seats under an independent loading mechanism with an 80 × 80 mm cooler pattern. Intel lists the socket as FCLGA2011 in its specification pages.

Overview
The socket arrived in August 2014 with Haswell-E and X99 for DDR4 desktops, then carried Broadwell-E in May 2016 with more cores and Turbo Boost Max 3.0. Core counts span 6 cores on i7-6800K and i7-6850K, 8 cores on i7-6900K, and 10 cores on i7-6950X. All run at 140 W and pair with discrete graphics, since HEDT parts carry no integrated GPU.
Memory stays DDR4 across both generations, with four channels and up to 128 GB on HEDT boards. PCIe runs at version 3.0 with up to 40 lanes from the CPU, 28 lanes on the entry 6800K. Boards add more lanes through X99 for extra slots. Because LGA 2011 and LGA 2011-v3 differ in pin use, parts do not move between them.

Who LGA 2011-v3 serves
LGA 2011-v3 belongs in editing rigs, 3D rendering nodes and lab servers where cores beat clocks. Ten core i7-6950X and 8 core i7-6900K cut render times with threads to spare. Six core i7-6800K and i7-6850K suit gaming plus streaming rigs that still need lanes for capture and NVMe.
Boards pair X99 with eight DIMM slots for quad channel DDR4 and multiple x16 slots for graphics. NVMe drives hang off CPU lanes for low latency. Power supplies need solid 12 V rails for 140 W sustained loads plus graphics.
Memory and PCIe
Memory support covers DDR4 UDIMM and RDIMM options per board, up to 2400 MT/s native with higher XMP kits where boards allow. Quad channel operation lifts bandwidth for rendering and simulation. Start with 32 GB for editing rigs.
PCIe arrives as version 3.0 with up to 40 lanes from the CPU, wired as x16 plus x16 plus x8 for graphics and NVMe on full parts. The 6800K trims to 28 lanes, which still covers two graphics cards plus NVMe. Chipset lanes add SATA and USB.
Cooling follows the 80 by 80 mm LGA 2011 pattern in the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. A 140 W tower or 240 mm liquid unit holds boost during long exports. No cooler ships in the box, so buyers add paste and a mount rated for HEDT.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit LGA 2011-v3?
Haswell-E and Broadwell-E for X99 boards. Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge-E need LGA 2011, while Skylake-X needs LGA 2066. The generations do not interchange despite similar pin counts.
Can a Haswell-E X99 board run Broadwell-E?
Yes, after a BIOS update with Broadwell-E microcode on many early boards. Late stock ships with support. Check the board CPU support list for the BIOS version.
What memory does LGA 2011-v3 use?
DDR4 in four channels up to 128 GB on HEDT boards. ECC is not supported on Core i7 HEDT parts.
How many PCIe lanes does LGA 2011-v3 provide?
PCIe 3.0 with up to 40 lanes from the CPU, 28 lanes on i7-6800K. Boards split lanes between graphics slots and NVMe per manual.
