Socket FS1 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
Socket FS1 is the AMD mobile socket for Llano APUs, introduced with the Sabine Fusion platform on June 30, 2011. It is a PGA-ZIF design with 722 contacts for socketed notebook processors in 35 W and 45 W classes. It was the last pin grid array socket for AMD mobile processors before BGA packages took over.

Overview
The socket carries dual and quad core Llano parts with on die Radeon graphics and a dual channel DDR3 controller, from the E2-3000M through the A4 M and MX, A6 M and MX and A8 M and MX lines. M suffix parts run at 35 W with DDR3-1333, while MX suffix parts run at 45 W with higher base clocks and DDR3-1600 support. No package dimensions are published in the sources opened, so none are claimed here.
Boards pair the socket with the Hudson mobile controller hubs A60M and A70M for USB, SATA and display outputs. Later AMD mobile moved to BGA packages with DDR3L and DDR4 memory. Socket FS1 laptops are therefore used stock, and service means board level parts rather than retail desktop components.

Socketed mobile package
Socket FS1 uses a 722-contact pin grid array with a retention lever, so a Llano mobile APU can be removed and replaced where the laptop allows access. That sets it apart from soldered BGA mobile packages where the chip never moves. The board BIOS must still list the exact APU string, since power tables differ between 35 W M parts and 45 W MX parts.
Because the socket is notebook specific, there is no retail cooler mount or desktop bracket. Thermal design uses custom heat pipes and fans sized per chassis, with shared pipes for the APU and any discrete GPU where fitted. A repaste during fan service often restores burst behavior on used laptops.
Memory and graphics
Socket FS1 designs use DDR3 SODIMMs in two channels, commonly DDR3-1333 on 35 W M parts and DDR3-1600 on 45 W MX parts. Two matched modules give the rated bandwidth, which matters twice over because the on die Radeon block shares system RAM and has no dedicated memory. Soldered RAM options lock size at purchase on the thinnest bodies.
PCI Express is revision 2.0 from the APU, with board specific wiring to discrete graphics options, Wi-Fi and storage. Many Llano laptops pair the APU graphics with a discrete card in Dual Graphics mode where the maker validates it. The Hudson A60M and A70M hubs add USB and SATA around the APU.
Platform lifecycle
Socket FS1 belongs to the Sabine Llano generation of 2011 to 2012. AMD later moved performance mobile to Trinity and Richland on the FS1r2 revision and then to BGA packages with DDR3L memory. New Socket FS1 boards are not current retail, so working systems are used stock.
For a running laptop the useful work is maintenance: clean fans, renew paste where the design allows service, and fit matched memory plus an SSD. A platform move means a new laptop on a current package. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows how to confirm the socket before ordering parts.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit Socket FS1?
Llano mobile APUs including the E2-3000M, A4-3300M through A4-3330MX, A6-3400M through A6-3430MX and A8-3500M through A8-3520M. Desktop Llano parts need Socket FM1 instead.
Is Socket FS1 the same as FS1r2?
FS1r2 is the later revision for Trinity and Richland mobile APUs on the same 722-contact layout. Cross compatibility without a board and pinout source should not be assumed.
What memory does Socket FS1 use?
DDR3 SODIMMs in two channels, DDR3-1333 on 35 W M parts and DDR3-1600 on 45 W MX parts.
Can a Socket FS1 processor be replaced?
Yes, where the laptop allows access and the BIOS lists the exact model. The retention lever releases the pin grid package.
