What the A4-3300M is

AMD A4-3300M is a dual core Llano mobile APU that AMD released in June 2011 for socketed laptops. It uses the Stars K10 core design on a 32 nm process, running at 1.9 GHz base with Turbo Core to 2.5 GHz. The cache is 2 MB of L2 with 1 MB per core. Power is 35 W. Graphics come from AMD Radeon HD 6480G with 240 shaders at a fixed 444 MHz.

Turbo Core gives bursty single thread tasks the full 2.5 GHz while threaded loads share the base rate. The 240 shader block doubles the E2 shader count, which smooths laptop video playback and light games. Threads equal cores at 2.

Mainstream laptops pair it with two DDR3 SODIMMs and a single fan. The 35 W envelope suits 15 inch bodies with standard cooling. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains why this socketed PGA part can be serviced while BGA twins cannot.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The A4-3300M fits Socket FS1 with 722 contacts in pin grid form. Hudson A60M and A70M boards carry it, with the BIOS listing the exact A4-3300M string and 35 W tables. Early Sabine boards may need a firmware update for later steppings.

At 35 W any Socket FS1 heatsink of that class covers it. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains why the maker list decides the result.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR3-1333, two channels. Two matched SODIMMs give the rated bandwidth that the shared 240 shader block needs. DDR3-1600 is an MX feature, so M boards hold 1333.

PCI Express is revision 2.0 from the APU for Wi-Fi, storage and any discrete GPU. Most A4-3300M laptops stay on the HD 6480G alone.

Cooling is board specific for 35 W with a single fan. Cleaning holds the 2.5 GHz burst longer than dusty assemblies.

Upgrade paths

On Socket FS1 the A4-3300M can move to faster A4, A6 or A8 Llano APUs where access and BIOS allow it. Memory and storage carry over. A cut down refresh with the same clocks is AMD A4-3305M on the same socket.

A platform move means a new laptop on a newer BGA package. Keep the current body for office duty after a wipe.
