Socket AM2 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
Socket AM2 is the AMD pin grid array socket for Athlon 64, Athlon X2, Sempron and Opteron processors that launched in May 2006 with DDR2 memory. It holds 940 contacts for 940-pin packages. Board lists show the full AM2 range from Windsor dual cores to Orleans single cores on DDR2 boards.

Overview
The socket matters for this batch because the Athlon 64 LE-1640 is a 2.6 GHz Orleans part with 1 MB of L2 cache at 45 W, and the Athlon 64 2650e is a 1.6 GHz Lima part with 512 KB of L2 cache at 15 W. Both run DDR2 in two channels with HyperTransport at 1000 MHz to 700 series chipsets. ASUS lists both models on the M2N-VM SE board, which confirms the pairing.
AM2+ arrived in 2007 with HyperTransport 3.0 while keeping DDR2, so AM2 chips fit AM2+ boards in many cases. Successor Socket AM2+ carries Phenom and Kuma parts, and DDR3 needs Socket AM3 with a new board.

Who Socket AM2 serves
Socket AM2 fits DDR2 towers that stay on their original boards. An LE-1640 owner keeps DDR2-800 modules and a 700 series board with a BIOS that lists the Orleans stepping. The 45 W envelope suits slim towers with the stock push pin sink.
Within the socket the choice is clocks against power at fixed single core. The LE-1640 at 2.6 GHz suits office work at 45 W, while the 2650e at 1.6 GHz sips 15 W for always on terminals. Both need the board maker CPU list because OEM boards vary even within one chipset.
Memory and expansion
Memory on AM2 is DDR2 only, commonly DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 in two channels up to 8 GB on many ATX boards. ECC UDIMMs work where the board wires them. One memory type runs at a time.
Expansion comes from the chipset because K8 CPUs provide no PCIe lanes. HyperTransport at 1000 MHz carries CPU traffic, and PCIe x16 slots hang off 700 series chipsets for period graphics cards. Cooling uses the 48 × 96 mm mount shared with AM2+, AM3 and AM3+, so later AMD towers usually fit.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit Socket AM2?
Single core AM2 parts with 940 pins, including Orleans cores such as the Athlon 64 LE-1640 at 2.6 GHz and Lima cores such as the Athlon 64 2650e at 1.6 GHz covered here. Dual core Windsor and Brisbane parts share the socket. AM2+ and AM3 chips with DDR2 controllers often boot on AM2 boards after a BIOS update, but AM2 chips never fit AM3.
Is Socket AM2 the same as Socket AM2+?
No. Both have 940 contacts but the key placement and power planes differ, and AM2+ processors need HyperTransport 3.0 features that AM2 boards lack. AM2 chips fit AM2+ boards with DDR2 in many cases.
What memory does Socket AM2 use?
DDR2 only, commonly DDR2-667 and DDR2-800, in two channels. ECC UDIMMs work on boards that wire it. A move to DDR3 means a move to Socket AM3 with a new board.
How many PCIe lanes does Socket AM2 provide?
No lanes come from these CPUs. HyperTransport links tie the CPU to the chipset at 1000 MHz, while PCIe slots hang off the board chipset.
