What the Sempron 3400+ EE SFF is
The AMD Sempron 3400+ EE SFF is a 1.8 GHz small-form-factor single core from May 2006. It runs one K8 core at 1.8 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 256 KB of L2 on a 90 nm process. Power is rated at 35 W on Socket AM2.
The EE SFF line cut Manila power to 35 W on an 800 MT/s HyperTransport link with a 9x multiplier at reduced voltage. It exists because small towers wanted the 256 KB cache at 1.8 GHz without the 62 W of the standard 3400+ Manila. Note that standard Socket 754 and AM2 parts share the 3400+ number with different clocks and need different boards.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 3400+ EE SFF drops into Socket AM2 boards with DDR2 memory and a BIOS that lists energy-efficient Manila parts. It does not fit Socket 754 boards despite the shared 3400+ number. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory is DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 in two channels through the on-chip controller.
HyperTransport at 800 MT/s links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.
Cooling is any 35 W rated AM2 heatsink on the 48 × 96 mm mount, with CoolnQuiet trimming draw at idle.
Upgrade paths
On Socket AM2 the upgrade is the Sempron 3500+ EE SFF at 2 GHz with 128 KB at the same 35 W, or the AMD Sempron 3200+ EE SFF at 1.8 GHz for a smaller cache. Beyond AM2 a move to AM2+ or AM3 needs a new board for Phenom class parts.
