What the Nano U2500 is

The VIA Nano U2500 is an ultra-low-voltage 1.2 GHz single core from May 29, 2008. It runs one Isaiah core at 1.2 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 64 KB data plus 64 KB instruction L1 with 1 MB of exclusive L2 on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 6.8 W on NanoBGA2.

The U2500 balances U-series efficiency and speed with a 12x multiplier on an 800 MHz V4 bus. Idle power drops to 100 mW. It exists because device makers wanted more than the 1.0 GHz U2300 without leaving the fanless envelope. The chip is soldered and cannot be replaced.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The U2500 ships soldered on NanoBGA2 embedded boards with a VIA companion chipset, pin-compatible with VIA C7 boards for OEM transitions. There is no socket upgrade and no board swap without replacing the whole device. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 through the board chipset.

An 800 MHz VIA V4 bus ties the CPU to the companion chipset. Expansion hangs off the chipset.

Cooling is the device maker heat spreader for the 6.8 W envelope, with PowerSaver trimming draw to 100 mW at idle.

Upgrade paths

On NanoBGA2 there is no CPU upgrade path because the chip is soldered, so a faster board means replacing the whole device. The VIA Nano U2400 at 1.3 GHz and up is the next U-series up for device makers, and the VIA Nano U2300 at 1.0 GHz is the lower-power option.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Nano U2500 use?
