What the Nano X2 U4025 is

VIA Nano X2 U4025 is a dual core CNC mobile processor that VIA released in January 2011 for soldered thin boards. It runs at a fixed 1.2 GHz with no burst and has no Hyper-Threading, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 1 MB of L2 per core. Power is 13 W on 40 nm TSMC silicon.

The U prefix marks ultra low voltage for thin laptops and embedded boxes. Idle power drops toward half a watt with Power Saver states. Office documents and browsing run within the 13 W budget.

There is no on-die graphics on this package. Display and I/O hang off the companion chipset over the 1066 MHz V4 bus. Hardware virtualization and PadLock AES ship on die.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Nano X2 U4025 solders to VIA NanoBGA2 with 400 balls in a 21 by 21 mm footprint and cannot be moved. It stays pin compatible with Eden, C7 and Nano parts for board reuse. A faster system means a new board.

The processor talks to its VX900, VN1000 or VX11 companion chipset over the V4 bus. Board manuals decide slot wiring.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR2 and DDR3 at up to 1333 MT/s over a single 64 bit channel with about 10.7 GB/s of bandwidth. Single channel operation is a hard limit, so size the memory once. ECC is not offered.

The V4 bus runs at 1066 MHz to the companion chipset. PCIe, display and storage I/O all hang off that chip.

Cooling uses a low profile heatsink under the 13 W envelope. Fanless thin builds are possible with chassis airflow.

Upgrade paths

There is no CPU upgrade path on soldered nanoBGA2. The U4025 cannot be removed, so more speed means a new board. A nearby dual reference with burst clocks is the U4300 class at 1.2 to 1.467 GHz.

A platform move means a new embedded board on a current package. Keep the old board for control duty after a wipe.

Frequently asked questions
