Motherboard and chipset compatibility

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X needs a motherboard with a AM4 socket. The table shows which chipset series accept it.

SeriesChipsetsSupport
500 seriesX570, B550, A520Works out of the box
Boards sold before Ryzen 5000 launched in late 2020 may need a BIOS update first.
400 seriesX470, B450Needs a BIOS update
Needs a BIOS update with AMD's Ryzen 5000 support. The board maker's CPU support list is the deciding source.
300 seriesX370, B350, A320Needs a BIOS update
AMD allowed Ryzen 5000 on 300 series boards from 2022, but each board maker decides whether to release the BIOS, and not every board received it.

Board makers publish a CPU support list for every model. Check it for your exact board before buying. Chipset details for AM4.

Recommended GPU pairing

Recommended tierMid-range 1440p
Example GPUsGeForce RTX 3060 Ti, Radeon RX 6700 XT
Target resolution1080p high settings to 1440p high settings

Six Zen 3 cores at up to 4.6 GHz with PCIe 4.0 and DDR4-3200 suit mid-range 1440p cards from its era. The RTX 3060 Ti from December 2020 and the RX 6700 XT from March 2021 match that class at 1080p high settings and 1440p high settings.

This is a rough match for a new build at the stated resolution, not a limit. A faster card still works and helps at higher resolutions or in games that load the GPU more than the CPU. A slower card is fine for lighter games and office use. The exact balance shifts with the game, the settings and the resolution, so no percentage is given.

What the Ryzen 5 5600X is

The Ryzen 5 5600X is a six core, twelve thread processor that AMD released in November 2020. It belongs to the Ryzen 5000 series, codenamed Vermeer, and uses the Zen 3 core design. It runs at 3.7 GHz base, boosts to 4.6 GHz, and carries 32 MB of shared L3 cache and 3 MB of L2. The launch price was $299.

The compute die is made on TSMC's 7 nm process, and AMD rates the chip at 65 W of default TDP with a maximum temperature of 95 °C. The multiplier is unlocked. The processor has no integrated graphics, so a graphics card is required before the system will show anything on screen.

Unlike most high end chips, the 5600X comes with a cooler in the box. AMD supplied the Wraith Stealth, which is meant for stock use at 65 W. That keeps the build cost down.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Ryzen 5 5600X goes into an AM4 socket, a pin grid array design with 1,331 pins on the processor. The socket is the same one AMD used for Ryzen from 2017, so older boards physically accept it. Whether they run it depends on the chipset and the BIOS.

Boards with 500 series chipsets (X570, B550 and A520) run it natively, although a board sold before late 2020 may need a BIOS update. Boards with 400 series chipsets (X470 and B450) can run it with a BIOS update from the maker. Boards with 300 series chipsets (X370, B350 and A320) can too, since AMD allowed it from 2022, but each maker decides whether to release the BIOS. Some boards have no such update.

The upgrade path is useful for old systems and risky for unknown ones. Before buying a 5600X for an existing board, find the board on the maker's CPU support page and check the BIOS version that adds Ryzen 5000 support, and make sure you can flash it. A board that lacks a flashback feature needs an older supported processor installed for that step.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s across two channels. Faster kits run with an XMP or DOCP profile switched on in the BIOS. There is no DDR5 option on AM4.

The processor supports PCIe 4.0, but the board has to carry it. On X570 and B550 boards a graphics card and a fast SSD can run at PCIe 4.0 speed. On 300 and 400 series boards the same processor runs PCIe 3.0.

The mounting holes are spaced 54 × 90 mm, different from the 48 × 96 mm pattern of older AMD sockets. Coolers made only for AM3 and AM3+ usually do not fit, and a replacement cooler needs AM4 support. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide covers the patterns. The Wraith Stealth in the box covers the stock use.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket the 5600X can be replaced by faster Ryzen 5000 models without changing the board. That is the cheapest upgrade for a platform that already runs it. Going beyond that means moving to AM5, which needs a new board and DDR5 memory. A processor like the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is one example, and the cooler may carry over.

If you are coming from the older AM3+ platform, the change is larger, because FX processors use a different socket and DDR3 memory.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X use?

It uses AM4, a pin grid array socket with 1,331 pins.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600X work on a B450 motherboard?

Yes, after a BIOS update that adds Ryzen 5000 support. Check the board maker's CPU support list.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600X work on an A320 motherboard?

Only if the board maker released a BIOS with Ryzen 5000 support. AMD allows it, but not every board received the update.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600X have integrated graphics?

No. It needs a separate graphics card.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600X come with a cooler?

Yes. AMD included the Wraith Stealth cooler in the box.
