Motherboard and chipset compatibility

AMD Ryzen 5 5600 needs a motherboard with a AM4 socket. The table shows which chipset series accept it.

SeriesChipsetsSupport
500 seriesX570, B550, A520Works out of the box
Boards sold before Ryzen 5000 launched in late 2020 may need a BIOS update first.
400 seriesX470, B450Needs a BIOS update
Needs a BIOS update with AMD's Ryzen 5000 support. The board maker's CPU support list is the deciding source.
300 seriesX370, B350, A320Needs a BIOS update
AMD allowed Ryzen 5000 on 300 series boards from 2022, but each board maker decides whether to release the BIOS, and not every board received it.

Board makers publish a CPU support list for every model. Check it for your exact board before buying. Chipset details for AM4.

Recommended GPU pairing

Recommended tierMid-range 1440p
Example GPUsGeForce RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6600
Target resolution1440p high settings

Six Zen 3 cores at up to 4.4 GHz with DDR4-3200 and PCIe 4.0 match mid-range 1440p cards from its era such as the GeForce RTX 3060 and the Radeon RX 6600. A faster card still works in the same slot, and the balance shifts with game, settings and resolution.

This is a rough match for a new build at the stated resolution, not a limit. A faster card still works and helps at higher resolutions or in games that load the GPU more than the CPU. A slower card is fine for lighter games and office use. The exact balance shifts with the game, the settings and the resolution, so no percentage is given.

What the Ryzen 5 5600 is

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600 is a six core, twelve thread desktop processor in the Ryzen 5000 series built on the Zen 3 core design with the Vermeer codename. It runs at 3.5 GHz base and boosts to 4.4 GHz, and it carries 32 MB of shared L3 cache with 3 MB of L2 and 384 KB of L1 in a chiplet package made with TSMC 7 nm FinFET. AMD rates it at 65 W default TDP with a 90 °C maximum temperature, and the multiplier is unlocked.

The 5600 is the lower clocked sibling of the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X. Both chips use the same Vermeer chiplet with six of eight cores enabled and the full 32 MB of L3 cache intact, so the gap between them is 200 MHz on base and boost clocks. PCIe 4.0 support carries over as well, which separates the 5600 from the Cezanne based Ryzen 5 5500 that stays on PCIe 3.0. AMD lists the graphics entry as Discrete Graphics Card Required, so a separate card is needed before the system shows a picture.

AMD announced the processor in March 2022 with a $199 SEP, and it reached shelves in April 2022 with the Wraith Stealth cooler in the box. That price matched the launch price of the Ryzen 5 3600 from July 2019, which made the 5600 a direct replacement for owners of older six core AM4 chips. Six Zen 3 cores with DDR4-3200 memory and PCIe 4.0 lanes place it in the mid-range 1440p class of its era, next to cards such as the GeForce RTX 3060 and the Radeon RX 6600.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Ryzen 5 5600 fits the AM4 socket, a pin grid array design with 1,331 pins on the processor itself. AMD names X570, B550, A520, X470, B450, X370 and B350 chipsets as supporting, which spans the 500, 400 and 300 series board families. The processor needs a board BIOS that recognizes Vermeer based Ryzen 5000 chips.

A 500 series board is the natural home, and X570 and B550 boards also switch on PCIe 4.0 for the graphics slot and the processor connected SSD slot. A 400 series board works after a BIOS update from the board maker, and a 300 series board works only when the maker released a BIOS with Ryzen 5000 support, since not every board received one. Before buying for an existing board, find the exact model on the maker CPU support page and read which BIOS version adds the processor.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s across two channels, and faster kits run with an XMP or DOCP profile switched on in the BIOS. Two matched sticks in dual channel mode matter more than raw kit speed on this platform, so a 2 x 8 GB or 2 x 16 GB kit is the usual choice. There is no DDR5 path on AM4.

The processor exposes PCIe 4.0 lanes for graphics and storage, but the board decides the speed they run at. On X570 and B550 boards a graphics card and a fast NVMe drive can use the full 4.0 speed, while on 300 and 400 series boards the same chip runs at PCIe 3.0 speed with no other change needed. Cooler mounting uses the AM4 pattern of holes spaced 54 × 90 mm, and the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide covers which brackets fit. The Wraith Stealth cooler in the box covers stock operation at 65 W, and a tower cooler leaves more room for sustained boost clocks.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, the 5600 is itself the upgrade for owners of Ryzen 1000, 2000 and 3000 chips such as the AMD Ryzen 5 3600, since it keeps the board, the DDR4 memory and the cooler while moving to faster Zen 3 cores. From the 5600 upward, the next steps are chips with more cores such as the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X when thread count matters, or a stacked cache model when game performance is the goal. Each of those moves reuses the same board and memory.

Moving past AM4 entirely means a new board and DDR5 memory on AM5, plus a cooler check even though many AM4 coolers carry over with the same mounting pattern. For a buyer choosing between the two Vermeer six core parts, the 5600 suits a budget build at its lower price, while the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X suits a build that wants the last 200 MHz. The two share the socket, the memory type, the PCIe version and the boxed cooler, so either drops into the same boards.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 use?

It uses AM4, a pin grid array socket with 1,331 pins on the processor.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600 work on a B450 or X370 motherboard?

Yes, after a BIOS update that adds Ryzen 5000 support. AMD lists X570, B550, A520, X470, B450, X370 and B350 chipsets as supporting, and the board maker CPU support list names the exact BIOS version.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600 have integrated graphics?

No. AMD lists the graphics entry as Discrete Graphics Card Required, so the system shows nothing on screen until a separate graphics card is installed.

What memory does the Ryzen 5 5600 support?

DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s across two channels. Faster kits run with an XMP or DOCP profile switched on in the BIOS. There is no DDR5 option on AM4.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600 come with a cooler?

AMD ships the boxed version with the Wraith Stealth cooler, and the launch SEP was $199. The multiplier is unlocked, so manual overclocking is possible on boards that allow it.
