What the Ryzen 5 3580U is

The Ryzen 5 3580U is a four core, eight thread Surface Edition processor from Picasso. Microsoft announced it in October 2019 for the 15 inch Surface Laptop 3 with a 2.1 GHz base and up to 3.7 GHz boost at 15 W. It matches the 3500U CPU with one extra graphics core.

Vega 9 graphics with 9 cores up to 1300 MHz lead standard Picasso graphics slightly for pen and touch creativity. Four megabytes of L3 back study and office multitasking. The 15 W envelope suits the thin Surface wedge with quiet cooling.

Microsoft tuned power curves with AMD for the Surface chassis, so the same silicon behaves a touch differently than generic 3500U bodies. Buyers chose Surface build and display over raw specs. The chip covers notes, browsing and light design tools.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 3580U solders to FP5 on the Surface Laptop 3 15 inch board. No other machine uses this Surface Edition stepping. Memory solders down at 8 or 16 GB with no slots.

Cooling is the Surface single fan assembly for 15 W with silent study modes. Firmware and drivers flow through Windows Update for Surface. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains soldered premium thin practice.

Desktop AM4 boards cannot host the mobile package. Surface parts never appear in retail board lists.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2400 soldered in two channels at 8 or 16 GB is the Surface configuration. There is no post purchase memory change. The 16 GB tier suits design students with large canvases.

PCIe 3.0 lanes wire the removable M.2 NVMe SSD from 128 to 512 GB. The SSD module is replaceable through the Surface foot panel on this generation. External displays run through USB-C.

Thermal design is 15 W continuous in a thin aluminum body. Dust matters little in the sealed design. Battery service through Microsoft extends travel life.

Upgrade paths

No internal processor or memory upgrade exists. The M.2 SSD module can grow where compatible parts exist. Docks and external displays extend desk use.

Within Surface the Ryzen 7 3780U adds graphics cores on the same FP5 family at purchase time. Later Surface generations moved to newer Ryzen and Intel platforms.
