What the Athlon 64 1500+ is

The AMD Athlon 64 1500+ is a 1 GHz single-core embedded processor from November 2004. It runs one K8 core at 1 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 512 KB of L2 on a 90 nm process. Power is rated at 9 W on Socket 754.

The Venice 1500+ served HP BladeSystem bc1500 blades on an 800 MT/s HyperTransport link with a 5x multiplier at 0.90 V. It exists because blade makers wanted a 64-bit Athlon 64 with a very low envelope for dense enclosures. The cpu_list November 2005 date differs from the table date, and the table date is used here.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 1500+ fits Socket 754 blade boards with DDR memory and a BIOS that lists Venice embedded parts. It is an OEM-only chip for blade systems, not a retail desktop part. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR in a single channel through the on-chip controller.

HyperTransport at 800 MT/s links the CPU to the chipset. Expansion hangs off the board chipset.

Cooling is the blade vendor heat spreader for the 9 W envelope with directed enclosure airflow.

Upgrade paths

On Socket 754 the upgrade is the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (1.35v) at 2 GHz with the same 512 KB cache where the board cools 51 W, or blade nodes stay at 9 W for density. Beyond Socket 754 a move to Socket 939 or AM2 needs a new board and memory.

Frequently asked questions
