sWRX8 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

sWRX8 is the AMD workstation socket introduced in July 2020 for Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors with the WRX80 chipset. It carries 4,094 contacts in a 75.4 by 58.5 mm package with a screw actuated retention and an orange carrier frame, and it has carried Castle Peak PRO 3000WX workstations through the Chagall PRO 5000WX refresh in March 2022. Against the smaller AM4 desktop socket with two memory channels, sWRX8 is the large workstation option with eight DDR4 channels and 128 Gen4 lanes from the CPU.

Overview

Boards pair sWRX8 with DDR4 Registered DIMMs with ECC up to 3200 MT/s and up to 2 TB across eight slots, with UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM and 3DS RDIMM on most designs. The CPU provides 128 Gen4 lanes for GPUs and NVMe, with 24 Gen4 lanes from WRX80 for a 152 lane total. The ceiling stayed at DDR4-3200 across the refresh, so memory choice follows board population rules rather than new speeds. The PRO 5000WX refresh works on many WRX80 boards after a firmware update that adds the new IDs.

Like every large LGA workstation socket, sWRX8 trades consumer simplicity for expansion. The chip can be swapped within the board support list, cooling reuses the TR4-SP3 mount with vendor qualified air or liquid for 280 W parts, and buyers choose core count with GPU and memory as one system. The socket sits alongside sTRX4 for high end desktops while sWRX8 serves workstations, and sTR5 carries the later Threadripper generations.

A large LGA workstation socket

sWRX8 follows the large LGA workstation rule: the processor sits in a screw actuated LGA socket with flat pads against spring contacts, so there are no pins to bend on the chip. Unlike soldered BGA laptop packages, the CPU can be swapped for another PRO WX SKU where the board firmware lists it. The orange carrier frame holds the large 75.4 by 58.5 mm package during handling, which matters more at this size than on small desktop sockets.

The socket choice shapes the workstation more than buyers expect. sWRX8 needs a WRX80 board with an 8-channel DDR4 RDIMM layout, and 3200 MT/s speeds already ask for careful population across eight slots. The March 2022 PRO 5000WX refresh works as a drop-in on many WRX80 boards after a firmware update that adds the new IDs. Compatibility still depends on firmware and power delivery, so a board that shipped with a 280 W 3945WX class part in 2020 may need validation before running a 64-core 5995WX.

Memory, expansion and cooling

Memory on sWRX8 is ECC DDR4 in an 8-channel layout with up to 2 TB per socket across UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM and 3DS RDIMM types on most boards. Population follows one DIMM per channel at 3200 MT/s for full bandwidth. Capacity and ECC join the CPU as lasting choices, since RDIMM pricing dominates many builds.

Expansion comes from 128 CPU Gen4 lanes plus 24 WRX80 chipset lanes for 152 total. Workstation boards split lanes between multiple GPUs, NVMe RAID and high speed networking, with the exact split fixed per board. Boards that need more than the CPU offers use the chipset lanes for SATA, USB and extra slots.

Cooling reuses the TR4-SP3 mount on sWRX8, so existing large Threadripper coolers fit the same retention. The whole PRO WX stack spans a 280 W envelope, and the heatsink is drawn for that workstation with vendor qualified air or liquid. The large package with its carrier frame needs even mounting pressure, so torque sequence follows the board maker specification rather than a generic cooler manual.

Where sWRX8 designs are used

sWRX8 covers expert workstations from 2020 through the 2022 refresh: content creation, CAD, software compilation and simulation with single socket simplicity. The PRO WX stack scales from 12-core parts through 64-core flagships in one socket, with high boost clocks near 4.5 GHz across the range. System vendors qualify memory kits per board for the full 8-channel bandwidth.

High end desktop builders meet sTRX4 platforms instead, while mainstream desktops use AM4 with fewer lanes and channels. sWRX8 stays the workstation home of Castle Peak and Chagall PRO with WRX80, and sTR5 carries the later Threadripper generations. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers why workstation compatibility lives in board vendor lists.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit sWRX8?

Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3000WX (Castle Peak, Zen 2) and 5000WX (Chagall, Zen 3) such as the 5945WX through the 5995WX. Consumer Threadripper parts for sTRX4 do not work here despite the identical package.

Do older WRX80 boards accept PRO 5000WX CPUs?

Yes, after a firmware update that adds the 5000WX IDs. Boards that shipped for PRO 3000WX in 2020 and 2021 predate those IDs.

Does sWRX8 use DDR4 or DDR5?

DDR4 Registered DIMMs with ECC, up to 3200 MT/s in 8 channels and up to 2 TB per socket, including UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM and 3DS RDIMM on most boards.

How many PCIe lanes does sWRX8 provide?

128 PCIe Gen4 lanes from the CPU plus 24 from WRX80 for 152 total. Single socket operation keeps the fabric simple with no multi socket links.
