Overview
One socket serves two platforms. TRX50 boards target high-end desktops with 4 memory channels, while WRX90 boards target workstations with 8 channels and remote management. PRO processors run on both, but non-PRO models need TRX50.
All models in this batch rate at 350 W with unlocked multipliers. Power delivery and cooling decide real sustained clocks, so the board support list matters more than the socket name.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storm Peak | Threadripper 7000 series | 2023 | Zen 4 processors up to 64 cores and PRO models up to 96 cores. Launched in November 2023. |
| Shimada Peak | Threadripper 9000 series | 2025 | Zen 5 processors up to 64 cores and PRO models up to 96 cores, including the 8 models in this batch. Launched in July 2025. |
Chipsets for sTR5

| Chipset | Segment | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TRX50 | High-end | Supports CPU overclocking. |
Memory layout
TRX50 boards wire 4 channels of DDR5 RDIMM with ECC, while WRX90 boards wire 8 channels. Speeds reach 6400 MT/s on Shimada Peak against 5200 MT/s on Storm Peak, one DIMM per channel in both cases.
A PRO processor on a TRX50 board drops to 4 channels, halving bandwidth and capacity. Memory-bound work such as simulation belongs on WRX90, while rendering and editing run well on either.
PCIe and cooling
WRX90 exposes up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes from PRO processors for multi-GPU and NVMe arrays. TRX50 exposes fewer lanes for single-GPU workstations with fast storage. Lane counts vary by board wiring, so the block diagram of the exact board decides expansion.
Both platforms support CPU overclocking with adequate cooling. The 350 W rating across this batch means sustained clocks depend on the heatsink and chassis airflow as much as on silicon.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit sTR5?
Threadripper 7000 and 9000 models plus their PRO twins. Non-PRO models need a TRX50 board, while PRO models run on TRX50 or WRX90.
Do Threadripper PRO chips work on TRX50 boards?
Yes, after checking the board support list. A PRO chip on TRX50 runs with 4 memory channels instead of 8.
Does sTR5 support DDR4?
No, only DDR5 RDIMM with ECC, one DIMM per channel. DDR4 and non-ECC UDIMM do not work.
Is the stock cooler enough for a 96-core model?
No. The 350 W processors need workstation cooling qualified by the board maker.
