Super Socket 7 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

Super Socket 7 is the AMD extension of the Socket 7 specification that carried K6-2 and K6-III processors with a 100 MHz front side bus and AGP graphics. It keeps 321 pins in a SPGA layout while adding the bus and voltage tables that later K6 parts need.

Overview

The socket served value desktops from May 1998 with parts from 300 MHz to 570 MHz. Its late Sharptooth mobile-derived cores brought PowerNow power saving to socketed boards.

Who Super Socket 7 serves

Super Socket 7 targets value K6 desktops with AGP graphics and SDRAM. Boards with MVP3, MVP4 and SiS 530 chipsets pair the socket with PC100 memory and AGP slots. Late BIOS revisions add the mobile-derived Sharptooth strings.

Memory and cooling

Memory is EDO DRAM and SDRAM through the board chipset at up to 100 MHz bus. Cooling uses the socket lug clip with coolers rated from 12 W to 16 W for Sharptooth parts. Exposed-die parts need level mounting pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit Super Socket 7?

Sharptooth K6-III+ and K6-2+ low-power single cores with 128 KB or 256 KB of L2 cache, including the K6-III+ 450ACZ at 12 W and the K6-2+ 570ACZ at 16 W from 2000 covered here.

Is Super Socket 7 the same as Socket 7?

No. Super Socket 7 keeps the 321-pin Socket 7 layout while adding 100 MHz bus and AGP support. Socket 7 boards may lack the voltage and bus tables that K6-2+ and K6-III+ parts need, so the support list decides.

What memory does Super Socket 7 use?

EDO DRAM and SDRAM through the board chipset, commonly PC100 SDRAM pairs on MVP3 boards. The board sets the exact type.

How many PCIe lanes does Super Socket 7 provide?

No lanes come from these CPUs. A 66 to 100 MHz bus ties the CPU to the chipset, while AGP and PCI hang off the chipset.
