LGA 4677 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
LGA 4677 is the Intel workstation socket introduced in early 2023 with the W790 chipset for Sapphire Rapids Xeon W processors. It has 4,677 contacts in a 77.5 by 56.5 mm package with E1A carrier, and it has carried W-2400 mainstream workstations through the W-2500 and W-3500 refresh in August 2024. Against the smaller LGA 1700 desktop socket with 20 CPU PCIe lanes, LGA 4677 is the large workstation option with up to 112 Gen5 lanes and 8-channel DDR5.

Overview
Boards pair LGA 4677 with DDR5 Registered DIMMs up to 4800 MT per s with ECC, up to 4 TB across 16 slots on 8-channel W-3500 designs. The ceiling stayed at 4800 MT per s across the refresh, so memory choice is fixed per board population rules at 1 or 2 DIMMs per channel. The CPU provides up to 112 Gen5 lanes for GPUs and NVMe, with 28 Gen3 and Gen4 lanes from W790 for storage and I/O.
Like every workstation LGA socket, LGA 4677 trades consumer simplicity for expansion. The chip can be swapped within the board support list, cooling is part of the workstation chassis with vendor-qualified air or liquid, and buyers choose core count with GPU and memory as one system. When a design needs dual-socket servers instead of single workstations, larger server sockets carry the Xeon Scalable silicon instead.

A large LGA workstation socket
LGA 4677 follows the workstation rule: the processor sits in a levered LGA socket with flat pads against spring contacts, so there are no pins to bend on the chip. Unlike soldered BGA laptop packages, the CPU can be swapped for another W SKU where the board BIOS lists it. The E1A carrier frames the large 77.5 by 56.5 mm package during handling, which matters more at this size than on small desktop sockets.
The socket choice shapes the workstation more than buyers expect. LGA 4677 needs a W790 board with 8-channel or 4-channel DDR5 RDIMM layout depending on the CPU family, and 4800 MT per s speeds already ask for careful population. The August 2024 refresh works as a drop-in on many W790 boards after a BIOS update that adds the new IDs. Compatibility still depends on firmware and power delivery, so a board that ships with a 185 W w3 part may need validation before running a 340 W w9 part.
Memory, expansion and cooling
Memory on LGA 4677 is Registered DDR5 with ECC in 4-channel or 8-channel layouts. W-3500 and W-3400 use 8 channels up to 4 TB, while W-2500 and W-2400 use 4 channels. Population follows 1 DIMM per channel at 4800 MT per s or 2 DIMMs per channel at 4400 MT per s. Capacity and speed join the CPU as lasting choices, since RDIMM pricing dominates many builds.
Expansion comes from CPU Gen5 lanes plus W790 chipset lanes. The 112-lane W-3500 designs split lanes between multiple GPUs, NVMe RAID and 10 GbE networking, with the exact split fixed per board. Boards that need more than the CPU offers use the chipset Gen3 and Gen4 lanes for SATA, USB and extra slots.
Cooling has no single retail answer on LGA 4677. The same socket spans 185 W mainstream parts to 385 W flagships, and the heatsink is drawn for that workstation with vendor-qualified air or liquid. The large package with E1A carrier needs even mounting pressure, so torque sequence follows the board maker specification rather than a generic cooler manual.
Where LGA 4677 designs are used
LGA 4677 covers expert and mainstream workstations from 2023 through the 2024 refresh: content creation, CAD, AI data prep and 3D rendering with single-socket simplicity. The W-3500 stack scales from 16-core w5 parts through 60-core w9 flagships in one socket, with unlocked X SKUs for tuning where the board allows. System vendors qualify memory kits per board for the full 8-channel bandwidth.
HEDT builders meet older high-end desktop platforms instead, while mainstream desktops use LGA 1700 with fewer lanes and channels. LGA 4677 stays the workstation home of Sapphire Rapids with W790. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers why workstation compatibility lives in board vendor lists.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit LGA 4677?
Xeon W-2400 and W-3400 plus W-2500 and W-3500 refresh parts such as the w5-3535X and w9-3575X. Consumer Core i9 parts do not fit despite the LGA form.
Do older W790 boards accept W-3500 refresh CPUs?
Yes, with a BIOS update that adds the refresh IDs. Early W790 boards shipped for W-2400 and W-3400 and need firmware for W-2500 and W-3500 parts.
Does LGA 4677 use DDR4 or DDR5?
DDR5 Registered DIMMs up to 4800 MT per s with ECC. W-3500 and W-3400 use 8 channels up to 4 TB, while W-2500 and W-2400 use 4 channels. XMP-compatible RDIMM overclocking is available on select X SKUs.
How many PCIe lanes does LGA 4677 provide?
Up to 112 PCIe Gen5 lanes on W-3500 and W-3400, and up to 64 Gen5 lanes on W-2500 and W-2400, plus 28 Gen3 and Gen4 lanes from the W790 chipset for storage and I/O.
