LGA 1150 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
LGA 1150 is the Intel desktop socket introduced in June 2013 with the 4th Gen Core processors, codenamed Haswell. It has 1,150 contacts and the same 37.5 × 37.5 mm package size as the sockets around it. Intel replaced it with LGA 1151 in 2015, which makes it one of the shorter lived mainstream sockets.
Quick facts
Overview
It looks a lot like the LGA 1155 socket before it. The two have the same footprint and the same 75 mm cooler mounting holes, but the notches differ and the electrical layout is different, so a processor made for one never works in the other. Haswell also moved the voltage regulator into the processor package, which changed how power reaches the chip.
Three kinds of processor exist for it. Haswell is the original 2013 generation, Haswell Refresh added faster clocks in 2014 including the unlocked Core i7-4790K, and a very small 5th Gen Broadwell desktop line followed in 2015. All of them use DDR3 or DDR3L memory, because Intel did not add DDR4 support until the next socket.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haswell | 4th Gen Core | 2013 | The first generation on the socket, launched with the 8 series chipsets. |
| Haswell Refresh | 4th Gen Core, refresh | 2014 | Higher clocks on the same socket, including the Core i7-4790K. Needs a BIOS update on 8 series boards. |
| Broadwell | 5th Gen Core, desktop | 2015 | A small number of desktop models. Check the board maker's CPU support list before buying. |
| Haswell-WS | Xeon E3 v3 series | 2013 to 2014 | Workstation processors with ECC DDR3 on C220 series boards, launched June 2013 with May 2014 additions. |
| Broadwell-DT | Xeon E3 v4 series | 2015 | Workstation processors with Iris Pro graphics and ECC DDR3, launched in June 2015 for C226 boards. |

Haswell Refresh and the Devil's Canyon models
The 2014 refresh is the part of LGA 1150 most buyers care about. It kept the socket and the Haswell design, raised the clocks, and introduced the Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K as the unlocked top models. The 4790K was nicknamed Devil's Canyon and received improved packaging and thermal materials compared with the 2013 chips, which helped it run at 4.0 GHz base and 4.4 GHz turbo.
These processors work on 9 series boards out of the box. On an 8 series board they need a BIOS update, and the problem is that the board has to be updated before the new processor is installed. A board bought in 2013 may need a borrowed older processor or a flashback feature for that step. The CPU support list from the board maker is the deciding document.
Memory
LGA 1150 is a DDR3 platform. The Core i7-4790K officially supports DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600, and low voltage DDR3L modules of the same speeds. Most boards offer two or four DIMM slots, with a ceiling of 32 GB on the processors Intel documents here.
There is no DDR4 option on this socket. A move to DDR4 means moving to LGA 1151 or newer, and the modules from an LGA 1150 build cannot be reused there.
Coolers and upgrade options
Coolers made for LGA 1155, 1151 and LGA 1200 share the 75 mm mounting pattern with LGA 1150, so a cooler from one of those builds normally fits. The 88 W rating of the Core i7-4790K is modest by current standards, so almost any decent cooler is enough.
The upgrade path inside the socket is short. The Core i7-4790K is the top unlocked 4th Gen model. The 5th Gen Broadwell desktop chips are a separate case, with only two Core models released and board support that varies, so check the support list first. For anything beyond that, the next step is a new board.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit LGA 1150?
Intel 4th Gen Core desktop processors (Haswell and Haswell Refresh) and the 5th Gen Broadwell desktop models. Processors for LGA 1155 and LGA 1151 do not fit.
Does the Core i7-4790K work on an H81 or B85 board?
Often yes, but only with a BIOS version that adds Haswell Refresh support. Look up the board on the maker's CPU support list.
Does LGA 1150 support DDR4?
No. Boards for this socket use DDR3 or DDR3L memory.
Can I use an LGA 1155 cooler on LGA 1150?
Yes in most cases. Both sockets use 75 mm mounting holes.
