What the Xeon X3470 is

The Intel Xeon X3470 is a quad core Lynnfield server processor from September 2009. It runs four Nehalem cores at 2.933 GHz base with Turbo Boost to 3.6 GHz, with Hyper-Threading for eight threads. Each core carries 256 KB of L2 cache with 8 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 95 W on a 45 nm process.

The X3470 sits below the X3480 with the same 95 W for single socket ECC towers. Benchmark comparisons track it against the X3480 and desktop i7 parts. Against the X3460 it adds base and turbo speed.

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC in two channels.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon X3470 fits LGA 1156 with 1156 lands. Server boards with 3400 series firmware boot it directly.

The socket table covers Lynnfield natively. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Xeon X3480 page shows the top Xeon 3400 quad.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 16 GB on server boards.

PCIe 2.0 x16 comes from the CPU package.

Cooling is a server tower rated for 95 W on the 75 × 75 mm pattern.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1156 the server upgrade is the X3480 on the same board. Beyond LGA 1156 a move to Sandy Bridge Xeon E3 needs a new board.

Frequently asked questions
