What the Xeon X3430 is

The Intel Xeon X3430 is a quad core Lynnfield server processor from September 2009. It runs four Nehalem cores at 2.4 GHz base with Turbo Boost to 2.8 GHz and no Hyper-Threading, so 4 cores give 4 threads. Each core carries 256 KB of L2 cache with 8 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 95 W on a 45 nm process.

The X3430 is the entry Xeon 3400 quad without threads beyond cores for single socket ECC towers. Against the X3440 it trails on threads at the same 95 W. CPU collectors track it as the 2.4 GHz Lynnfield Xeon.

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC UDIMMs in two channels where boards wire them.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon X3430 fits LGA 1156 with 1156 lands. Server boards with 3400 series firmware boot Lynnfield Xeons directly. Desktop P55 boards rarely list X SKUs.

The socket table covers Lynnfield natively. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Xeon X3480 page shows the top Xeon 3400 quad.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 16 GB on server boards.

PCIe 2.0 x16 comes from the CPU package for RAID and network cards.

Cooling is a server tower rated for 95 W on the 75 × 75 mm pattern.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1156 the server upgrade is the X3440 with threads on the same board. Beyond LGA 1156 a move to Sandy Bridge Xeon E3 needs a new board.
