What the Xeon L5410 is

The Intel Xeon L5410 is a low-voltage 2.333 GHz server quad core from March 2008. It runs four Core cores at 2.333 GHz with no turbo, so 4 cores give 4 threads. Cache is 6 MB of L2 per die, 12 MB total, on a 45 nm process. Power is rated at 50 W on Socket 771.

Harpertown packs two Wolfdale dies with a 1333 MT/s front side bus for dual-processor servers. The L5410 exists because virtualization hosts wanted a cheaper efficient quad between the 40 W L5408 and the 2.5 GHz L5420. Launch timing rests on the task list at March 2008.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The L5410 fits dual-socket Socket 771 server boards with a BIOS that lists low-voltage Harpertown parts. It suits dense chassis qualified for 50 W quads. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 FB-DIMMs through the server board chipset.

A 1333 MT/s front side bus ties the CPU to the server chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling uses vendor qualified server heatsinks for the 50 W envelope in dense chassis with directed airflow.

Upgrade paths

On Socket 771 the upgrade is the Intel Xeon L5420 at 2.5 GHz or the Intel Xeon L5430 at 2.667 GHz within the 50 W line. The Intel Xeon L5408 at 2.133 GHz drops to 40 W. Beyond Socket 771 a move to a newer Xeon platform needs new boards and memory.
