What the Xeon L5408 is

The Intel Xeon L5408 is a low-voltage 2.133 GHz server quad core from February 2008. It runs four Core cores at 2.133 GHz with no turbo, so 4 cores give 4 threads. Cache is 6 MB of L2 per die, 12 MB total, on a 45 nm process. Power is rated at 40 W on Socket 771.

Harpertown packs two Wolfdale dies with a 1066 MT/s front side bus for dual-processor servers. The L5408 exists because dense blade and rack servers needed quad cores inside a 40 W envelope where standard 80 W parts could not go. Launch timing rests on the task list at February 2008 against a March 2008 datasheet entry.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The L5408 fits dual-socket Socket 771 server boards with a BIOS that lists low-voltage Harpertown parts. It suits dense chassis qualified for 40 W quads. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 FB-DIMMs through the server board chipset.

A 1066 MT/s front side bus ties the CPU to the server chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling uses vendor qualified server heatsinks for the 40 W envelope in dense chassis with directed airflow.

Upgrade paths

On Socket 771 the upgrade is the Intel Xeon L5410 at 2.333 GHz or the Intel Xeon L5420 at 2.5 GHz within the 50 W low-voltage line. The Intel Xeon L5430 at 2.667 GHz tops the efficient range. Beyond Socket 771 a move to a newer Xeon platform needs new boards and memory.
