What the Xeon D-1571 is

The Xeon D-1571 brings Broadwell to BGA 1667 for cool running racks with DDR4. It launched in February 2016 with a 1.3 GHz base and up to 2.1 GHz boost at 45 W. Intel targets dense shelves that need 16 cores with ECC at low watts.

Twenty four megabytes of cache carry guests and tables. The low base clock fits 16 cores in 45 W. Thirty two threads cover containers plus replication.

There is no integrated GPU, so serial and network manage the node. The process is 14 nm. The multiplier is locked. DDR4 at 2400 MT/s and DDR3 with ECC in two channels feed cores with up to 128 GB.

Buyers choose the board at order time with memory and network tier. The 45 W rating suits crowded racks with limited cooling. VT-x and VT-d support guests where consolidation matters.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon D-1571 is soldered to the board on BGA 1667 and cannot be replaced. Upgrading means replacing the board or the whole node. Boards pair the SoC with RDIMM slots for ECC and SFP cages for network.

BGA 1667 boards wire PCIe, SATA, USB and LAN per server design. LGA racks cannot take this BGA chip. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains soldered packages.

Single socket nodes are the deployment. Growth means more BGA 1667 nodes. Service follows the server manual.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4 at 2400 MT/s and DDR3 with ECC in two channels suit dense hosts. DDR4 lifts throughput for guests. Start with 64 GB for virtual nodes.

PCIe 3.0 with CPU lanes serves NVMe and HBAs. The SoC adds SATA and USB plus integrated LAN. Dual 10 Gb paths cut add in cards.

Cooling has no retail mount pattern because the SoC is soldered. Vendors design heatsinks for 45 W with front to back airflow. Metering one row confirms circuit headroom.

Upgrade paths

On the same package, the Intel Xeon D-1577 shares 1.3 GHz base with the same 16 cores for similar racks. The Intel Xeon D-1587 lifts to 1.7 GHz base at 65 W for faster stores. Both share BGA 1667 boards.

Twelve core D-1557 suits lighter archives where listed.

Past Xeon D nodes move to later D-2100 parts. The D-1571 covers 2016 racks where 16 cores with ECC must run at 45 W.
