Motherboard compatibility

Intel Pentium U5400 needs a motherboard with a BGA 1288 socket. Chipset by chipset data for this codename is not recorded yet. See the BGA 1288 chipset list and the board maker's CPU support list.

What the Pentium U5400 is

The Intel Pentium U5400 is a dual core Arrandale mobile processor from May 2010 for thin notebooks. It runs two Westmere cores at 1.2 GHz with no turbo and no Hyper-Threading, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Each core carries 256 KB of L2 cache with 3 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 18 W on a 32 nm CPU die with a 45 nm graphics die in one package.

The U5400 is the ultra low voltage Pentium Arrandale, matching the 18 W class of the Celeron U3xxx with a full 3 MB of L3 cache. Against the 35 W P6000 at 1.877 GHz it trails badly in speed but fits fanless leaning thin designs. HD Graphics cover office displays with two display support.

Memory is DDR3 in two channels up to 8 GB through the on package controller.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Pentium U5400 is soldered to the board in BGA 1288 and cannot be replaced. Notebook repair means board replacement.

Firmware must list the exact stepping with the HM55 class chipset. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide covers soldered rules, and the Intel Pentium U5600 page shows the 1.33 GHz sibling.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1066 in two channels up to 8 GB, fixed per design.

PCIe 2.0 x16 comes from the package for discrete graphics or board devices.

Cooling is a thin heat pipe assembly drawn for 18 W, shared with the chipset.

Upgrade paths

There is no CPU upgrade path on BGA 1288 because the chip is soldered. A U5600 at 1.33 GHz fits the same class where offered, otherwise a new notebook is needed.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Pentium U5400 use?

BGA 1288, the soldered 1,288-ball package. The chip cannot be removed.

How many cores does the Pentium U5400 have?

Two cores and two threads at 1.2 GHz with 256 KB of L2 per core and 3 MB of shared L3 cache.

What memory works with the Pentium U5400?

DDR3-1066 in two channels up to 8 GB, fixed per design.
