What the Pentium Dual-Core T4200 is

The Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 is a dual core Penryn mobile processor from January 2009 for budget notebooks. It runs two cores at 2.0 GHz with no turbo and no Hyper-Threading, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 1 MB of shared L2 on a 45 nm process. Power is rated at 35 W with an 800 MT/s front side bus.

The T4200 is the slowest Penryn Pentium T4xxx in this batch. Against the T4300 it trails by 100 MHz at the same 35 W. Family tables place the T4xxx line at 1 MB with Socket P and 35 W.

There is no graphics on the CPU. Display comes from the mobile chipset.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Pentium Dual-Core T4200 fits Socket P with 478 pins. Montevina and Santa Rosa boards boot it with a listed BIOS.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4500 page shows a faster Pentium on the same socket.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 or DDR3 in two channels depending on the chipset.

The 800 MT/s front side bus links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling uses the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly rated for 35 W.

Upgrade paths

On Socket P the upgrade is the T4300 or T4400 on the same board. Beyond Socket P a move to Arrandale needs a new notebook.
