What the Core i7-840QM is

The Intel Core i7-840QM is a quad core Clarksfield mobile processor that Intel launched on June 20, 2010 at 1.867 GHz with Turbo Boost to 3.2 GHz. Hyper-Threading gives eight threads from four Nehalem cores, backed by 256 KB of L2 per core and 8 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 45 W on a 45 nm process with 774 million transistors on a 296 mm² die.

The 840QM sits below the Extreme 920XM and 940XM, trading an unlocked multiplier for a lower price at $568 MSRP. Against the 740QM it adds 2 MB of L3 cache and base speed for rendering. Turbo reaches 3.2 GHz on one core and steps down as more cores load.

There is no graphics on Clarksfield. Display comes from the board chipset or discrete mobile graphics with DDR3-1333 memory.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Core i7-840QM fits Socket G1 with 988 pins. PM55, HM55, QM57 and HM57 boards boot it directly with a mid 2010 BIOS. Check the notebook vendor list because cooling must handle 45 W plus discrete graphics.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Core i5-480M page shows a dual core alternative on the same socket.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1333 in two channels up to 8 GB for 21.3 GB/s.

PCIe Gen 2 x16 comes from the CPU package for discrete graphics.

Cooling uses a strong vendor heat pipe assembly rated for 45 W with dual pipes on most designs.

Upgrade paths

On Socket G1 the upgrade is the 940XM Extreme with an unlocked multiplier on the same board. Beyond Socket G1 a move to Sandy Bridge quad needs a new notebook.
