What the Core i5-8350U is
The Core i5-8350U is a four core, eight thread mobile processor for business laptops. It launched in August 2017 with a 1.7 GHz base and up to 3.6 GHz Turbo at 15 W. One hundred megahertz of base and two hundred of burst separate it from the consumer 8250U, which gives small but steady gains in long compiles and calls.
Six megabytes of Smart Cache feed office suites with management agents in the background. The higher base keeps sustained tasks above the 8250U pace in the same chassis. Configurable TDP from 10 W to 25 W lets IT choose silent fleets or performance images.
UHD Graphics 620 from 300 MHz to 1100 MHz drives business docks with dual 4K output. Management features on business boards matter more than graphics here. Office buyers run encrypted drives and video meetings without a discrete GPU.
On 14 nm the 8350U solders to corporate ultrabooks with DDR4 or LPDDR3. Intel aimed it at vPro style fleets where stable images and remote management decide purchases. It shares coolers and boards with the 8250U generation.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 8350U solders to BGA 1356 with no socket option. Laptop model fixes the processor for life. Corporate SKUs add management firmware on top of the same silicon.
Boards use DDR4-2400 SODIMM slots or soldered LPDDR3-2133, with up to 32 GB where slots exist. Buyers who keep laptops for five years should favor slotted memory models. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where to confirm soldered status.
The consumer Intel Core i5-8250U is the nearby quad core on the same package with slightly lower clocks. The dual core Intel Core i3-8130U is the budget alternative on BGA 1356.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4-2400 or LPDDR3-2133 in two channels up to 32 GB is the official support. Matched pairs near 37.5 GB per sec of bandwidth help video calls and screen sharing. Single channel bodies trail in graphics tests.
Twelve PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU feed NVMe SSDs plus board devices. Corporate images boot from Opal SSDs on four lanes. The rest serve card readers and LTE modules.
Fifteen watts need a single fan with a thin pipe. Ten watt down mode at 800 MHz suits fanless tablets, while 25 W up mode at 1.9 GHz suits thicker business bodies. Fleet service means SSD and battery swaps.
Upgrade paths
There is no CPU upgrade on soldered BGA 1356. Storage and memory where socketed are the only levers. A move from hard drive to NVMe SSD transforms 8350U laptops most.
Past this generation the path is a new laptop on a later platform with more cores and LPDDR4X or DDR5. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains why soldered business laptops age as whole units.
