What the Core i5-2405S is

Intel Core i5-2405S is a quad core Sandy Bridge desktop processor that Intel released in May 2011 for power capped towers. It runs at 2.5 GHz base with turbo to 3.3 GHz and has no Hyper-Threading, so 4 cores give 4 threads. Cache is 6 MB Intel Smart Cache. Power is 65 W on a 32 nm process.

The 2405S matches the 2400S on CPU clocks while moving graphics to HD Graphics 3000. Office displays look the same, but the stronger block helps video playback. Small offices chose it for quiet builds.

Graphics are Intel HD Graphics 3000 at 850 MHz to 1100 MHz. The block feeds office monitors through board outputs. Memory is DDR3 in two channels.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Core i5-2405S fits LGA 1155 in FCLGA1155 form. H61, B75, H77 and other 6 and 7 series boards boot Sandy quads directly. The board BIOS should list the 2405S string.

At 65 W the chip suits compact towers that cannot cool a 95 W quad. Check case clearance before reusing a tall tower cooler.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR3-1066 and 1333, two channels, up to 32 GB. A 4 GB to 8 GB pair covers office use. ECC is not supported.

PCI Express is 16 lanes from the CPU at PCIe 2.0 for a single graphics or I/O card. Most builds leave the slot empty.

Cooling uses the 75 × 75 mm desktop mount with a standard fan. Dust filters extend service intervals in labs.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1155 the 2405S can move to the standard i5-2400 for higher base clocks, or to an i7-2600 for Hyper-Threading. The board and RAM stay. A same power HD2000 comparison is Intel Core i5-2400S.

A jump to a current DDR4 platform needs a new board, cooler mount check and RAM. Keep the 2405S tower for office use.
