What the Core i5-2320 is

Intel Core i5-2320 is a quad core Sandy Bridge desktop processor that Intel released in September 2011 for office and home towers. It runs at 3.0 GHz base with turbo to 3.3 GHz and has no Hyper-Threading, so 4 cores give 4 threads. Cache is 6 MB Intel Smart Cache. Power is 95 W on a 32 nm process with 1,160 million transistors.

The 2320 sits 100 MHz above the 2310 on base and turbo. Threaded office work and light creation tasks run well. It still trails unlocked K parts in tuning headroom.

Graphics are Intel HD Graphics 2000. The block covers dual office monitors. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide contrasts this desktop LGA part with mobile forms.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Core i5-2320 fits LGA 1155 in FCLGA1155 form. H61, H67, P67, Z68 and later B75 plus H77 boards all boot Sandy quads directly. No BIOS update is needed for this chip.

Small tower makers used the 2320 with H61 boards and 4 GB of DDR3. Any retail board with the 2320 string in its CPU list works the same way.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR3-1066 and 1333, two channels, up to 32 GB. Matched pairs help shared graphics. ECC is not supported.

PCI Express is 16 lanes from the CPU at PCIe 2.0 for a single graphics or I/O card. Most builds leave the slot empty.

Cooling is the standard 95 W desktop heatsink on 75 × 75 mm spacing. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide notes this mount carries across LGA generations.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1155 the 2320 can move to the i5-2500 for 300 MHz more, or to an i7-2600 for Hyper-Threading. The board, RAM and storage stay. A same socket dual core reference is Intel Core i3-2120.

A platform move to DDR4 needs a new board and RAM. Retire the 2320 box to classroom duty.
