What the Core i3-2330M is

Intel Core i3-2330M is a dual core Sandy Bridge mobile processor that Intel released in June 2011 for socketed laptops. It runs at a fixed 2.2 GHz with no turbo and includes Hyper-Threading, so 2 cores give 4 threads. Cache is 3 MB Intel Smart Cache. Power is 35 W on a 32 nm process with 624 million transistors.

The 100 MHz step over the 2310M trims load times in office apps. Intel lists the launch as the second quarter of 2011, with retail availability in June. Threaded suites run smoothly on 4 threads.

Graphics are Intel HD Graphics 3000 at 650 MHz to 1100 MHz. The block covers laptop displays and video playback. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide places this rPGA part against soldered forms.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Core i3-2330M fits Socket G2 with 988 contacts in FCPGA988 form. This page covers the socketed rPGA version. Intel also lists the same silicon soldered on BGA 1023 for thin bodies, which is not a field swap. HM65 and HM67 boards from the Sandy wave carry the socketed version, and HM76 plus HM77 boards accept Sandy parts.

The BIOS must list 2330M by name. A board that omits the string may refuse to boot even when the chipset matches.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR3-1066 and 1333, two channels, up to 16 GB. Two matched modules help the shared graphics block. ECC is not supported.

PCI Express is 16 lanes from the CPU at PCIe 2.0. Lanes feed wireless, storage and card readers. Most 2330M systems never add a discrete card.

Cooling follows the 35 W mobile pattern with a single fan and board specific heatsink. Cleaning the fan restores sustained clocks.

Upgrade paths

On Socket G2 the 2330M can move to the 2350M for 100 MHz more, or to a Core i5 M with turbo where access and firmware allow it. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide notes laptop heatsinks stay board specific, so reuse the fitted assembly.

Memory and storage move with the board. A nearby socketed reference is Intel Core i3-2310M. A full platform change needs a new laptop.

Frequently asked questions
